Stanley R. Greenberg was given the job of 'Executive Story Consultant' on 'Suitcase' apparently as it was felt that, being an American, he would get along fine with Richard Bradford. He did not, and Greenberg only wrote four of the 30 episodes. 'All that Glitters' opens with a disturbing sequence in which a young boy called 'Steve' ( Alan Baulch ) is kidnapped whilst playing alone in woods. McGill is hired by 'Michael Hornsby' ( Michael Goodliffe ), an ambitious politician, to find him. Hornsby is happily married to the lovely 'Dolores' ( Barbara Shelley', and they are regarded as a 'golden couple'. But all that glitters is not gold. Hornby's interest in the boy baffles Mac. His investigations are hampered by the surly locals, in particular 'Tommy' ( Duncan Lamont ), who resents his presence in the community and beats him up the first chance he gets. Stephen is Hornsby's illegitimate son ( Dolores is unable to have children ). Some of the villagers have learnt this, and are attempting extortion. Unless Hornsby pays up, the boy dies. McGill tells Hornsby to agree to their demands, so he can plan a trap...
Michael Goodliffe was a talented actor who sadly took his own life in 1976. His other credits include 'The Avengers' and 'Callan', as well as the films '633 Squadron' and 'The Man With The Golden Gun'. Barbara Shelley is well known to Hammer film fans through her roles in 'Dracula Prince Of Darkness' and 'Quatermass & The Pit'. In the role of 'George' is the late Eric Thompson, writer and narrator of 'The Magic Roundabout' children's show ( also Emma's dad ). Kevin Stoney, who played villains in two 'Doctor Who' stories of the '60's - 'The Daleks Master Plan' and 'The Invasion' - is seen fleetingly as a barman.
Herbert Wise turned down further 'Suitcase' assignments, and later made the memorable 'I, Claudius' for the B.B.C..
Another solid episode. Once again poor McGill winds up in hospital, unconscious. Quite a change from the lame wise-cracks used to close other private eye shows.
