Who's Got The Brooch?
ShadeGrenade30 May 2009
Warning: Spoilers
The British Government has been rocked by a series of high-profile scandals ( what else is new? ), and another looks all set to erupt: National Resources Board Chairman 'Sir Dennis Galt' ( Gerald Flood ) has been dating the lovely 'Magda' ( Gay Hamilton ) while his wife 'Lady Carol' ( Rachel Herbert ) is overseas. When he breaks off their relationship, she storms tearfully out of a Chinese restaurant, taking with her a valuable brooch belonging to his wife. He wants it back, but as men are following him constantly does not wish to risk being spotted going to her flat, so hires McGill to do the job. Gaining access to Magda's flat, he does not find the brooch, but a letter written in German. He meets Magda, finding her to be a fantasist who tells him her wealthy family live in a castle in Austria. She has given the brooch to her new boyfriend 'Gentleman Jim Ezard' ( Edward Fox ), a right cad who intends using it to settle old gambling debts. A jeweller named 'Reynolds' ( Sydney Tafler ) tells Sir Dennis that unless he gets the brooch soon he will inform Lady Carol...

The arrival of Jan Read as script-editor signalled a shift in style, with fewer episodes having down-beat endings and brutal violence. This one, though not overtly humorous, is nevertheless lighter than many of the earlier editions. No-one is killed for one thing! Had 'Suitcase' gone to a second series, it is my guess that we would have seen more in similar vein. Gerald Flood ( Sir Dennis ) was one of the stars of the I.T.V. spy show 'The Rat Catchers', while Edward Fox - then just beginning on a long and impressive career - was a few years away from 'The Day Of The Jackal'. Gay Hamilton ( Magda ) appeared in the second part of 'Variations On A Million Bucks' as 'Lucia'. Rachel Herbert, seen briefly as 'Lady Carol', was 'Number Fifty-Eight' in 'The Prisoner' episode 'Free For All'.

McGill tells Sir Dennis his command of the German language is not too good, and yet in 'Somebody Loses, Somebody...Wins?' informs Liebkind that he carried out assignments in East Berlin during his C.I.A. days. Did he take along an interpreter?
