Master of blackmail
ShadeGrenade10 August 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Three respectable businessmen - 'Felix De Burgh' ( Peter Vaughan ), 'Peters' ( John Cairney ) and 'Harris' ( Maurice Good ) - check into the Hotel Glendure in Scotland under assumed names. They are plotting to murder the man who has been blackmailing them - 'George Masters' ( Donald Houston ). Also at the hotel is McGill, hired by Masters to tail De Burgh. The men try to warn McGill off, but he pays no attention. They have obtained a World War Two naval mine, and plan on blowing up Masters' yacht, named after his trophy wife 'Lucinda' ( Wendy Hall ). De Burgh's motivations for killing Masters are not as straight-forward as they initially appear. He is conducting an affair with Lucinda, and plans on continuing the blackmail business after Masters' death...

Written by Kevin B.Laffan, the future creator of 'Emmerdale Farm' ( now known simply as 'Emmerdale' ), this is a decent episode, bolstered by its cast. The late Donald Houston was a popular British actor whose numerous credits include the film 'Where Eagles Dare'. He appeared in several ITC shows such as 'The Champions' and 'Danger Man'. Peter Vaughan will be well known to comedy fans for his roles in 'Citizen Smith' and 'Porridge'. The lovely Wendy Hall also crops up in the episode 'Somebody Loses, Somebody...Wins?' as a hotel receptionist. After appearing in the first season of the B.B.C. sci-fi drama 'Doomwatch' ( as 'Pat Hunnisett' ), she strangely seems to have dropped out of sight.

Freddie Francis conjures up a wonderful action scene - escaping from the villains, McGill jumps into the loch. Peters shoots at him. The gun fills the screen.

McGill gets one of his very best moments. After beating the living daylights out of Masters' bodyguard 'Crick' ( Peter Brace ), he demands that Masters hand over the agreed payment ( Masters had tried to wriggle out of doing so ). As Masters coughs up, he asks: "What way is your blackmail different to mine?" to which Mac replies: "Mine worked!". He is not joking.

Not many Scottish accents here, I'm afraid, but good stuff all the same.
