"I want to see me daughter!"

Warning: Spoilers
Millionaire recluse 'Chester Farson' ( Gordon Gostelow ) dies of heart failure. Eldest son 'Gerald' ( Terance Alexander ) keeps news of his death secret, hiring drunken Shakespearian actor 'Gray' to impersonate his father to avoid paying death duties. He neglects to tell sister 'Jane' ( Justine Lord ) about the deception, instructing his servants to keep her away from the family home in case she unmasks the fake. Jane spots one of her father's paintings - 'Property Of A Gentleman' - up for auction in London, and denounces it as stolen property. She hires McGill to investigate. Breaking into the Farson home, Mac finds Gray beginning to live the part. As the plot unravels, Mac is offered a bribe to keep his mouth shut. But will he?

Wilfred Greatorex had his name removed from the credits. Presumably he was unhappy with the way it turned out. It is a decent enough story, based on an entirely believable premise. With Inheritance Tax having recently been made into a hot political issue by the Tories ( inspired by its scrapping in America by the thankfully-gone Bush administration ), it is interesting to see that even in 1967 the rich considered the paying of 'death duties' to be grossly unfair. They firmly believe that the tax burden should be placed on those at the lower end of the social scale.

The main weaknesses are the casting of Justine Lord and Gordon Gostelow. Lord's role looks as if it was written for Sylvia Syms. She is miscast as an English rose ( though looks stunning in some groovy '60's fashions ). Gostelow, on the other hand, is delightfully eccentric as 'Gray' ( he was dubbed for his brief role as 'Farson' ) but there's a bit too much of him. The episode at times takes on a lunatic air reminiscent of a Diana Rigg 'Avengers'. Frank Gatliff as an 'auctioneer' and Derek Francis' 'doctor' provide welcome support. However, this is not one of the more successful episodes.

By the way, McGill says he comes from Texas.

Preposterous casting spoilt this episode.

Warning: Spoilers
**Warning, Spoilers**. How daft did the producers think we were. What I found totally bogus was that the OLD man in this episode, the father of the two brothers and the sister was TWO years younger than the elder brother and Two years older than the other one.

Just how stupid did Sidney Cole the producer think we were that we could not judge the age of someone. Oh and what were the chances of the old guy replacement actor guy just happening to die. Not very likely was it.

The writing was a bit naff for this episode, but I enjoyed the plot twist involving the Inheritance malarkey. As it was a copy in 720p video quality I watched it all the way through. Were it of lesser quality I wouldn't have bothered with this or the other episodes. Good picture quality of these 50+ year old series makes it worth watching.

Some MIAS episodes are gripping all the way through. I like the George Sewell one early on, episode called "The Sitting Pigeon", that was real gritty. Overall it is a decent enough series. McGill was a right old hard nut, believable as well, plenty of punch ups and some nice action now and then.

The whole series is worth checking out, especially if on the full HD via Bluray or elsewhere online at 720p. It brings out the textures of the clothing & furniture, looks good, nice and sharp.

Yea this particular episode just 5 stars but over all the series is well worth more than 5 stars. ...... Good old Lew Grade did well with what series he brought to the TV, some good stuff, Department S, UFO, Champions etc but getting back to this particular episode with the old guy who was in real life 2 years younger than one of his on screen sons was totally unrealistic & for me unpalatable.

PS, nothing against any of the the actors in this episode, just they needed an older old guy than what was in it, not someone made up to look older, which we could see through in an instant.
