The late Raymond Bowers was responsible for the worst episode of 'Upstairs, Downstairs' - 'The Swedish Tiger' - and the worst episode of 'Danger Man' - 'A Man To Be Trusted' - and his one and only 'Man In A Suitcase' offering is none too impressive, although Donald Jonson's 'Why They Killed Nolan' is far worse. Mac goes to Spain to accept a new case only to find the man who hired him didn't. 'Gomez' ( Rupert Davies, best remembered as 'Maigret' in the B.B.C.'s long-running French detective series ) has been released from prison and rebuilt his ruined home ( bombed during the Spanish Civil War ). In a secret cellar are bars of stolen government gold. Gomez wants Mac to put out of action a former friend called 'Palma' ( Cyril Shaps ), now working for the Spanish police, and who wants the gold back. Palma tries to blackmail Mac into working for him using a forged letter purportedly written by an anarchist movement. So Mac is caught in a crossfire and does not know which way to turn...
A dull, talky episode which gives Mac almost nothing to do. The most notable thing about it is Freddie Phillips' guitar music. Davies' jovial character seems modelled on Anthony Quinn's in 'Zorba The Greek'. How it the feud is resolved is not particularly inspired. Ricardo Montez, who plays a cab driver, was previously in 'Variation On A Million Bucks'.
