Did you know
- TriviaWhen asked for a cigarette, Mannix says he hasn't smoked since July (1971).
- GoofsWhen Mannix is showing Art Malcolm the book of rare letters at the end, the book is supposedly a collection of many different such documents, yet as Mannix flips through the pages, every page is exactly the same.
- Quotes
Joe Mannix: Well, what can I do for you, Miss Warren?
Cindy Warren: Well, um, after I left headquarters last night, I didn't feel like going back to that house, so I checked into a motel in West L.A. I was there I guess about maybe ten minutes and I got a phone call from a man, and, uh, he threatened me.
Joe Mannix: Do you know who it was?
Cindy Warren: No.
Joe Mannix: Well, what exactly did the man say, exactly, word for word?
Cindy Warren: Well, he said... he said something like, "Did Monty rap to anyone before he died?"
Joe Mannix: What did you tell him?
Cindy Warren: I said I didn't think so. And then, uh... Hey, I'm not exactly sure how all this went down, but, well, he kept hitting on, "Did Monty and Victor Jury talk?" Oh, yeah, he asked if Monty made any phone calls.
Joe Mannix: Did he?
Cindy Warren: Well, not after Victor and I got there.
Joe Mannix: Did he mention anything about Monty's mother or buttons... or General D.?
Cindy Warren: No.
Joe Mannix: Anything else?
Cindy Warren: Yeah. The last thing he said to me was, "If you talk, Miss Warren, you're going to wind up like Monty did."
Joe Mannix: Talk about what?
Cindy Warren: I don't know.
Joe Mannix: Have you any idea?
Cindy Warren: No, I asked him and he hung up.
[Peggy walks in with some coffee]
Joe Mannix: Peggy, see if you can get John Randolph on the phone, huh?
Peggy Fair: The postal inspector of the Federal Building?
Joe Mannix: Yeah, ask him if he can find out if there's any mail being held for Monty Dawes at a general-delivery office anywhere in this area.
Peggy Fair: Right.
Cindy Warren: It's really weird. I'm caught up in something, but I don't know what it is. Why me? I don't know why I'm involved. I don't know what I'm going to do to get out.
Joe Mannix: Well, the first thing to do is find a safe place for you to stay until we come up with some answers.
Director Reza Badiyi was once again in the directors seat, and you know he had bruises coming for Joe --including a tumble down a flight of stairs.
Also true; the more attractive Joe's clients were, the MORE trouble lay ahead. Chic Joanna Pettit, who many claim was a Sharon Tate lookalike, portrays a singer (named Cindy) in distress. Her problem is killers believe she knows where a fortune is stashed, and its all tied to an old buddy of Joe's who gets himself killed. Naturally.
Writing at its very best, special thanks to Ernest "Ernie" Frankel. Ernie wrote many PERRY MASON episodes, and was a producer for the MOVIN' ON tv series. Take Note: Yes, there's an accurate historical reference to the Declaration of Independence thrown in to keep us armchair detectives and historians entertained. Ernie did his homework.
This episode blasts off and Badiyi uses his flair for some well staged fights, sort of in the tradition of DIRTY HARRY. It would have been interesting to know if the writers of DIRTY HARRY took notes from MANNIX? A distinct possibility.
Truly, a memorable performance from Joanna Pettit, who began her career in the 60s, with such classic films as the James Bond adventure CASINO ROYALE as Mata Bond. Joanna turned up frequently on NIGHT GALLERY, also on HARRY O where she may have been a rival to Farrah Fawcett, who played Harry's neighbor.
In a real life twist, just a few years before this episode was filmed, Joanna made headlines when she had lunch with Sharon Tate, only a few hours before she was killed by the Manson gang. Incredible story and an excellent trivia question.
Also look for veteran actress Irene Tedrow, who was everywhere on tv, playing the part of Sara. BEST GAG scene is when Joe is asked if he wants a cigarette. To which he replies, "I haven't smoked since July"....possibly when this episode was filmed.
The red Jaguar going off the cliff is THE BEST, and it looks like it was a fairly new car, for a change of pace.
Recommended viewing. SEASON 5 EPISODE 10 remastered CBS/Paramount dvd box set.
