Solid show opener

I never caught MARTIAL LAW when it was originally shown on television but being a big fan of Sammo Hung I was eager to catch up with it. This first episode provides a nice introduction to the series and I was pleasantly surprised by the regular fight scenes which are choreographed by Hung himself in the best Hong Kong style.

Hung plays a cop on the trail of some hoodlums from Shanghai who are now in Los Angeles. He's partnered with various anodyne Americans in order to pursue the villains and the story goes from there. This has a commendable lightness of touch with plenty of situation humour and likable character touches.

The opening garage brawl is vintage Sammo and includes a nice somersault from the roof of a car which shows the star at his agile best. Later, a garden fight with a couple of goons wearing spiked shoes perfectly blends comedy and action, although the climactic fight that finishes the episode is a bit rushed. Stock Asian-American actor Tzi Ma (RAPID FIRE) proves a solid foe. Overall I enjoyed this and look forward to getting stuck in to the rest of the series.
