This is a very touching episode. The comedy doesn't come from the situation; it comes from another session in Lou's office. It is also the inimitable Ted Baxter who has no filter. The main story involves the fact that Edie, Lou's wife is leaving him. They have sought marriage counseling and it has been suggested they try a trial separation. Lou can't figure out what is going on and they have a final goodbye. I know some criticize her character for not hanging in there. When she can't give him a precise reason for leaving, it would seem she is shallow. However, if the writers have any sense (and they do), they know that with as long as they have been married, it is easy to find comfort in the relationship without trying to keep it fresh. While she doesn't have anything specific, things have obviously built up inside her. The natural thing is for her to leave, even if it causes hurt.
