Location filming in Grand Teton National Park back in the mid 60's was a bit challenging with very limited resources. All Cast and crew had to be either flown or driven in from California. The first 8 episodes were all filmed on location then shooting moved to California using stock footage previously shot for establishing shots or "B" roll. Jackson's airport at that time was very small with limited air service. Locals in the Jackson area were used a lot for background, driving, catering, child care, horse wrangling and other production needs. The Monroes proved that a weekly series could be done on location in a remote area such as Wyoming and NBC followed suite with "Then Came Bronson" with Michael Parks shooting their first 3 episodes in Jackson Hole. Locals did find Hollywood's attempt to put the Monroe cabin on a sound stage to match the Wyoming shots a bit funny. When shooting resumed back in California,.All of a sudden Pine trees were added around the cabin that did not exist on the Wyoming location set and a huge mural of Mount Moran was placed behind it with clouds for the skyline that "never"moved. Mount Moran was visible at times on the Wyoming location but it was off in the distance down range.
This was Barbara Hershey's first starring role. She was a teenager then. While the Monroes was a popular Western on ABC and well received it sadly was up against some tough competition with NBC's The Virginian and CBS's Lost in Space. The Monroes only lasted one season. Ironically, many of the cast stayed at the Virginian Lodge in Jackson during location filming in Grand Teton National Park.
All of the Indians used in the Wyoming location shoots for background came from the Blackfoot tribes in Idaho and the Wind River Indian Reservation in Riverton, Wyoming.
