A young boy has difficulty accepting his widowed mother's new boyfriend. Once he looks at him through his father's old glasses, his fears are only magnified...
"The Family Man" is a bit of a mixed bag. There are some things that it does really well, but there are some things that it also does really bad. We'll start with the positive.
The special effects are fantastic. They're only really used in one big key moment, but they really shine. There's a shot where we're facing Warren while he's looking back through the glasses. Through the lenses we see his monstrous form, complete with scary yellow eyes, while outside of them, he looks normal. You really have to see it because it's really well done.
The monster looks great here. I can't say exactly what he's supposed to be, he kind of looks like a giant lizard-man with yellow eyes and fanged teeth, but I will say he looks great. Just thinking about those beady, yellow eyes gives me the chills sometimes.
Now it's time for the negatives, the most obvious being a really screwy ending. It kind of loses touch with all reality. We know that Warren's true form must somehow be exposed to everyone but the way in which it's handled is odd. The ending is almost as outrageous as the wacky "Portrait of the Artist." Yes, the viewer can understand Neil's overwhelming desire to save his family from this monster, but pulling a gun on him? This is another one where I felt they didn't know how to end it.
Unless I spaced out and missed it, we're not told what Warren's real intentions are. He rambles on about "needing families" but for what? He says this with a bit of a sinister tone, but it's still too vague. Why would getting shot finally "unmask" him? The magical abilities of the glasses are never explained either, but the episode works just fine without this.
"The Family Man" has some great special effects and some great monster makeup. If you can enjoy it on these merits alone, then go ahead and watch it. Just don't expect a deep and thorough plot.
