The new beginning

After the successful 'Mortal Kombat' movie in 1995 and the less convincing sequel 'Annihilation' in 1997, a TV series followed, but it survived only 1 season in 1998-99. The reasons are easy to see. While the computer game was and still is well known for its violent fights, the TV adaptation had to be mild enough for a PG rating, and that never worked with the gamers, neither did the name attract much of a general audience. The opening episode tells us that Kung Lao defeated Shang Tsung at Mortal Kombat, but that was not the end of his problems, because the father of his would-be bride sentences him to death. Kung Lao gets help from an unexpected side: a beggar and a former thief turned slave girl. Good start.
