- While in New York, the dead body of a homeless person missing a shoe is discovered and leads Jessica to believe the supposed accidental death was not an accident.
- Jessica visits old NYPD Lieutenant Timothy Hanratty and helps him with the corpse of a John Doe, found with only one shoe. Fingerprints identify him as Elliot Winston, a former drunk who died from alcohol poisoning. Neighbor and friend, Grace Fenton, remarks that his secretive papers are missing. Jessica checks in as a rich hypochondriac into Doctors David Latimer, Lowell Wheatley and Craig Zachary's hospital, where Elliot was an accountant. Captain Everett Larson still couldn't care less, until the wino adjacent to the corpse confesses stealing his watch, wallet and one shoe, then charges him with the murder.—KGF Vissers
- In New York for meetings with her publishers, Jessica Fletcher drops in on her old friend NYPD Lt. Timothy Hanratty. He still has a sweet spot for Jessica but not for his new boss, Captain Everett Larson. Tim is intrigued by the death of Elliot Winston who was found dead on skid row. Oddly, he was wearing only one shoe. Tim is suspicious, as is Jessica, but the new Captain thinks he's wasting his time. The medical examiner attributes the death to over-consumption of alcohol but Elliot's neighbor, Grace Fenton, insists that he was a reformed alcoholic and hadn't touched a drop in years. The dead man worked as an accountant at a prestigious medical clinic and was working at home on something related to the clinic. Jessica decides to pose as a wealthy hypochondriac to see just what is going on there.—garykmcd
