Drawing Blanks on a Cold Case Bank Robbery
WeatherViolet18 November 2009
This episode marks Richard Paul's seventh and final appearance as Cabot Cove Mayor Sam Booth. Richard Paul, Don Galloway, Robert Lansing and Mark Roberts have since passed.

"The Prodigal Father" spins from the Biblical parable "The Prodigal Son," in which a wealthy landowner welcomes his wayward son back into the fold while those around him question his reasoning to dishonor his responsible son, who has obeyed the father, laboring beside him, and not squandering his inheritance.

And now Bonnie Jenks Hastings (Claudia Christian) must make a similar decision, to accept her "Prodigal Father," Ned Jenks (Donnelly Rhodes), who has been long presumed dead, into the lives of her pre-teen daughter, Sally Hastings (Mindy Ann Martin), who adores her "Prodigal Grandfather," and Bonnie's husband, Dave Hastings (Larry Wilcox), who objects on various levels to the notion that Bonnie embrace the ex-convict Ned.

Twenty years earlier, Ned Jenks participated in a Cabot Cove bank robbery, before deserting his wife, who has since perished, and their young daughter, Bonnie.

As a result of Ned's return, Dave Hastings becomes persecuted by the community, and dismissed from his position as a dock worker by employer Herb Walsh (Robert Lansing).

When Bonnie turns to old friend and neighbor Jessica Fletcher (Angela Lansbury) for advice and guidance, while reviewing the photograph album which Ned has presented, Jessica attempts to recreate the bank robbery scenario of twenty years past, by questioning those who were directly affected by the robbery and the murder of a bank official at the time.

Elton Summers (Don Galloway) had held a position at the bank but wasn't on duty that particular Wednesday morning when Ned and his cohort instigated the armed robbery. Elton had been promoted to his current managerial position as a result of the vacancy.

Gil Blocker (Andrew Prine) had served as bank security guard at the time of the robbery. He had been assigned a pistol with blank cartridges, which could not match any shoot-out by perpetrators. Since the time, he has been employed at a Cabot Cove diner, along with Waitress Linda (Robin Gordon).

Maxine Malloy (Kathleen Nolan) had served as a bank teller in those days. She had been interested in Elton, who married another, while Gil had secretly admired her and remained single. Since then, Maxine has opened her Antiques business and often displays her wares in flea-market style in the open concourse before her Cabot Cove shoppe.

After much tension amid the Hastings household, Bonnie makes her decision against Dave's expressed wishes, and Jessica is more than willing to stand beside her dear friend and former student. But after they speak with George the Desk Clerk (Abe Vigoda) at the Lighthouse Motel, a body is discovered in a front room before its open window.

Doctor Lyle Rush (Mark Roberts) substitutes for Seth Hazlitt, as William Windom takes a Sabatical leave from "MSW" Cabot Cove episodes for a period during Season Seven. Jessica assists Sheriff Mort Metzger (Ron Masak) and Deputy Floyd (Will Nye) in investigating this new murder, which affects the lives of their fellow several Cabot Cove citizens, but enlisting "Prodigal Husband" Dave Hastings to trap the perpetrator into confession.

Rounding out the episode cast are Sarah Simmons as the Woman and Gary Hollis as the Man, potential customers at Maxine's Antique Shoppe.

Very good episode.

Convicted Bank robber Need Jenks returns to Cabot Cove to rekindle his relationship with his daughter, who believed, along with everyone else, that he was dead, his return angers the community.

Very, very good, a well imagined murder mystery, with a strong set of characters, and a well conceived plot.

Sometimes they made the murder victim a little too much of a sympathetic figure, that wasn't the case here, he was actually hard to like, it made you approach his death a little differently.

You're made to wait, and you're kept guessing, the solution came as something of a surprise.

Not sure about you, but I kept on seeing John Major as The Bank Manager, The Spitting Image.

I really did like the presence of Donnelly Rhodes, who played Ned, cracking actor.

Very good, 8/10.

"The Prodigal Father", murder and a bank robbery
TheLittleSongbird17 October 2017
Have always been quite fond of 'Murder She Wrote'. It is a fun and relaxing watch that makes you think as you try to unwind in the evening. If one wants more complex, twisty mysteries with lots of tension and suspense 'Murder She Wrote' may not be for you, but if you want something light-hearted and entertaining but still provide good mysteries 'Murder She Wrote' fits the bill just fine.

Without being one of the best episodes of Season 7 (not one of the worst ones either), "The Prodigal Father" is another solid and well-executed episode. There is actually not much wrong with it at all, other than Richard Paul having little to do in a buffoonish role that only got any real development in one episode out of eight ("Town Father") and Abe Vigoda despite being a welcome sight also being under-utilised. It's just that it just misses the extra special spark of the very best 'Murder She Wrote' episodes.

Angela Lansbury and Ron Masak though cannot be faulted, they're such an easy presence and there is a nice tension in how they investigate and solve the murder and the bank robbery. Will Nye plays his dumb character with enough subtlety to avoid being annoying. Claudia Christian and Donnelly Rhodes are particularly very good in their roles, really felt for Bonnie and one really believes that Ned genuinely wants to have a better life and reform despite his past. Larry Wilcox, Robert Lansing and Don Galloway are all solid too. In fact nobody's bad but some have characters more interesting and better used than others.

"The Prodigal Father's" mystery is compelling, not too simplistic and not too confusing either. The solution to the murder is a surprising one and the truth about the bank robbery is not what it seems either. The detective work is very much cohesive.

Production values as always are slick and stylish with some nostalgia induced. The music has energy and has presence but also not making the mistake of over-scoring, while it is hard to forget or resist the theme tune. The writing is thoughtful, cosy and light-hearted while taking itself seriously as well.

Overall, solid and well done. 8/10 Bethany Cox

Look who the cat drug in....!

20 years ago, Ned Jenks was involved in a bank robbery in Cabot Cove (the murder and hold up capital of the world, apparently). Now, all these years later he's returned...which is a HUGE surprise as everyone thought Jenks was dead. Now that the statute of limitations has passed, although nearly everyone in town hates him, there's nothing the Sheriff can do about it. But, when Jenks ends up dead...well, that's clearly in Sheriff Metzger's domain...as well as Mrs. Fletcher's!

This is a very original and enjoyable episode with some nice twists. Not among the very best, but an excellent episode and one that is worth seeing.

The prodigal daughter
coltras3525 August 2023
The latest local scandal involves the return of Ned Jenks, a man who had robbed a bank 20 years ago and was subsequently presumed to have drowned in a river while trying to escape from the police. He returns to reunite with his daughter but that's going to be difficult as she thinks he is dead. He speaks to her and at first she doesn't believe he is her father but slowly accepts him. However, her husband and the rest of community do n't. Some of them have secrets to hide. And that why the prodigal father gets killed.

Decent MSW episode with a nice set-up, a reunion between daughter and father and a man who gets everyone nervous and bitter. Jessica, like always, is a voice of reason as well as being a smart sleuth.

When the husband tells his wife that the old man isn't her father and says he's a con artist and then leaves for work...she's now alone with a con artist stranger.
