- A funeral reception is in progress at the home of Sarah Kidwell. Her husband Jim was reported killed but no other details were provided. The phone rings, so Sarah picks up the receiver. The caller says, "It's Jim. I'm not dead!" She drops the phone in shock. Gibbs is notified about the incident and asked to put his NCIS team on the case. They go to interview Sarah and are introduced to Lisa Peary, the wife of Craig. Craig and Jim were on the same mission when they were killed. Gibbs asks Tony and Cait examine the records for the two marines, but they encounter a security block. Even Abby and Gibbs cannot break through. Gibbs schedules a visit with Lt. Col. Walsh, Craig and Jim's superior. They meet him at an outdoor location. He tells them the deaths were hushed because the men were in deep cover, trying to seem like other marines. They had run afoul of an angry prostitute who poisoned them with formaldehyde. Details of this incident would upset the wives. Abby traces the original phone call to a location near Quantico. When Gibbs storms into Walsh's office, it is not the same man. They were scammed. One of Jim's friends brings in an answering machine message to check against the one Sarah received. They match. Is he alive? What about the coffin that was just buried? They exhume the grave and find that Jim is indeed dead. But Ducky discovers a piece of newspaper used as an embalming plug. He can find no cause of death until it suddenly hits him - Jim was killed by embalming him while he was still alive. Residues in the vitreous humor of the eyeball confirm this. Also, the paper used as wadding was not published until after the date he was reported dead. Jim and Craig were carrying $2M in ransom payments to a Columbian drug cartel. A fellow agent decided to keep the money for himself and bump off Jim and Craig. He was in the process of getting Craig ready, when Gibbs, Tony, and Cait find him. He tosses a grenade at the NCIS team. They dive for cover with only Gibbs suffering a shrapnel wound. They were able to make Lisa and her kids very happy in returning Craig alive.—Garon Smith
