- Death on the Doorstep
An update of The Doorbell Rang. Archie Goodwin's friend, Barney Sullivan, calls Archie Goodwin and arranges to see him at Nero Wolfes brownstone, but he is shot by a sniper on the doorstep of the brownstone before he can tell Archie what he wanted. Then, Archie learns that Wolfe's address was accessed through the police data system 10 minutes before the appointment.
When Inspector Cramer warns Archie that he is being followed by a detective in the Police Intelligence department, Archie and Wolfe set a trap for the rogue elements from the NYPD. After discovering a listening bug in his office, Nero and Archie use the presence of the device to lure the police into the brownstone in the middle of the night to look for the "evidence" that Archie and Wolfe mentioned within hearing of the bug. Wolfe takes possession of the badge of that cop and then parlays it into a solution to the entire problem. In the end, Cramer's trust in Wolfe and Goodwin is well placed.
