Danny Harrison, a schoolteacher, holds a second job at Luke Hickey's diner to make ends meet. Frank Curran comes to the diner flashing a wad of cash, which is tempting to Danny. When Curran is robbed and killed, Danny is charged.
Danny Harrison arrives home as his wife Eileen is upset about their washer being repossessed. Danny is a schoolteacher who works two jobs and has a young daughter who requires an expensive leg brace. Danny won't go to Eileen's father for help or take a better paying job so Eileen tells him she wants a divorce for their daughter's sake. Eileen visits Perry to see if he will help her obtain the divorce as the two were childhood friends. Perry refuses but offers other help as she leaves his office. Danny's second job is at Luke Hickey's small diner which is hurting financially. Danny's friend Frank Curran comes into the diner drunk ordering chili and coffee. The drunk Curran tosses the chili in the floor complaining about it. Hickey wants to call the police but Danny offers to take Frank home. First Luke takes a dollar from Frank who has a wad of cash including $500 bills. Danny takes Frank home leaving him in his apartment after getting the attention of neighbor Phil McCabe. The next day Frank is found murdered and Danny is charged with the motive being the missing money.—Anonymous
