Pete visits "The Maltese Falcon"
fred-65930 January 2023
This is a good one if only to spot the "homages" to Dashiell Hammett's novel and John Huston' film of "The Maltese Falcon". Pete gets to be Sam Spade. There's the Fat Man Kasper Gutman, Joel Cairo, Miss Wonderly, Wilmer and the rest are all here. It's a briefcase not a black statuette this time but you will recognize the plot. This version involves a train rather than a ship and Pete has no partner to be killed by Mis Wonderly but it follows the same course. It takes a lot to pack all the elements into thirty minute but they get it done. If you're going to plagiarize then do it from the best. A fun one!

She Doesn't Look Like a Toughie

The girls give Pete a pretty good working over in this 30-minutes. If it's not Edie giving him shin pains for hanging around a girl in pajamas, it's Lavinia giving him a flying tackle for just being around. Poor Pete, he shouldn't have let cutie Lavinia hire him for something or other. But don't worry about the murky plot, it's Barbara Stuart who lights up the show. Her Lavinia is like Debbie Reynold's wrestling sister. She's got this little girl grin every time she beats up on Pete. Worse, it seems to turn her on. If I were Pete, I'd refund her money and hightail it out of there. Speaking of character color, there's "Tony Mafia" as- surprise, surprise- a gun-toting thug. Trouble is to take a breath his mouth gapes open like a dying fish. I've never seen anything quite like it. Good also to see movie vet Joe Sawyer picking up a payday in a supporting role.

Anyway, it's solid Gunn, with some atmosphere, a shoot-out at Mother's, and, of course, the always reliable Edie.

The Briefcase

This is a pretty packed 30 minutes.

Peter Gunn is hired by Lavinia Cooper to follow her husband. However he figures that he is being followed and dies in a shootout with Peter Gunn.

Now Gunn realises that Lavinia has made a fool of him.

There is a dicey politician who wants the contents of a briefcase and henchmen turning up everywhere.

Even Edie is sore with Peter Gunn. Not much time for a song here.

Peter Gunn is grateful that the world is not full with the likes of Lavinia Cooper.
