- Gunn is hired by a lawyer to help get evidence against a female blackmailer. The woman is found dead, an apparent suicide; the death is tied to the murder of her neighbor, an elderly woman happened to be at her own window at the wrong time.
- A woman tells a man that she "won't say anything". There is a struggle with man, who has a a gun. Marion Verner (Leatrice Leigh) is shot and killed. A woman who lives across the way witnesses the whole thing from her window. The murderer kills her too.
Anthony Scott (Charles Aidman) is married to Laura (Eleanor Audley), who is very ill. He hires Gunn because he's being blackmailed by Marion, with whom he was playing around. A check of Marion's apartment by Gunn turns up little. Lt. Jacoby (Herschel Bernardi) also comes by the apartment. He wants to know what Gunn knows about the case, but the detective can't tell him much.
Down at Mother's, Gunn promises to take Edie (Lola Albright) out. Mother (Minerval Urecal) tells Gunn that Scott is on the phone and it's important. Edie gets angry and pushes Gunn into the water. Gunn tells Scott he'll take care of business as soon as he changes his clothes.
Gunn goes over to Marion's hotel room to find her dead, an apparent suicide. Jacoby finds a note where Marion's states she suffered from alcoholism and was suffering from withdrawal when she shot her neighbor in the next apartment. It doesn't add up for Gunn.
The hotel clerk (Bruno VeSoto) tells Gunn that he didn't know that Marion was in the room. All he knows was that a man told him he was sending over a trunk for his cousin to be placed in the room. The man rented the room.
Gunn pays a visit to Marion's boyfriend, a boxer named Cal Moreland (Ralph Gary). Moreland didn't know that Marion was dead. He says that she couldn't have committed suicide. He and Marion were going to get married. Later, Gunn talks to the bartender (Milton Parsons) at the bar where Marion worked. He confirms that Marion was a drinker. The bartender wondered who could have held the gun for her that was used in the suicide. Marion's hand was paralyzed.
Gunn goes to Scott and accuses him of Marion's murder. Scott confesses and goes along with Gunn to the police.
