Private Screenings: Debbie Reynolds (2002)

*** 1/2 (out of 4)

Host Robert Osborne sits down with Hollywood actress Debbie Renolds to discuss her film and stage career as well as a couple very hot moments in the tabloids. Reynolds comes off incredibly charming as she talks about her childhood and how her entering the Mrs. Burbank contest won her a trip to Warner who would eventually sell her to MGM. At MGM she appeared in films like JUNE BRIDE and THREE LITTLE WORDS but her big break happened when she landing a spot in SINGIN' IN THE RAIN. Reynolds talks about the rumors of Gene Kelly not wanting her for the part and she has a few nice stories to tell about the making of the film. She also tells a very entertaining story about an encounter with Fred Astaire. From here she talks about the public spotlight and meeting Eddie Fisher who she would eventually marry. Of course, with Fisher she would eventually lose him to Elizabeth Taylor and this is discussed as well. Some other great stories including one with Frank Sinatra warning her not to marry a singer and her discussing Richard Brooks who she said was very tough to work with. HOW THE WEST WAS WON gets some discussion as does THE UNSINKABLE MOLLY BROWN and her comeback role in MOTHER. Fans of Reynolds will certainly want to check this out as she doesn't shy away from any topic and her charm is certainly on full display.
