- Rowdy Yates: Y'know, I don't get you, Dan. Most of the men would have been busting this close to home. You weren't even gonna ride up and take a look?
- Dan Fletcher: Well, there ain't much to see.
- Rowdy Yates: Well, what about your folks?
- Dan Fletcher: Just my Ma and my brother.
- Rowdy Yates: If you weren't gonna say hello, how come you came along with me now?
- Dan Fletcher: There's something wrong.
- Cal Fletcher: Ain't it mighty funny that fire breaks out just when we don't have any water to fight it.
- Margaret Fletcher: Why it wouldn't have done much good the way that fire went.
- Frank Travis: I don't know what it is about Cal. But I swear that boy's got the Devil in him.
- Margaret Fletcher: So did you have when you were his age. Maybe that's it.
- Frank Travis: Well, Margaret, it ain't no matter for a joke. I got to admit I'd be almost glad to see the last of Cal.
- Margaret Fletcher: Because of Flora, you mean?
- Frank Travis: If it was Dan, I'd feel different.
- Rowdy Yates: A pretty girl can always get a job in the city, not that kind of a job for a girl like you.
- Flora Travis: How do you know what's right for me?
- Rowdy Yates: In the big city?
- Flora Travis: In a very large city.
- Rowdy Yates: Well, all right. I don't think you'd make it.
- Flora Travis: Of course, I would. I'd make a very good waitress.
- Rowdy Yates: You sure would.
- Flora Travis: Or a saleslady. Or whatever girls do in big cities.
- Rowdy Yates: They do lots of things.
- Flora Travis: They do?
- Rowdy Yates: Uh huh.
- [They kiss]
- Flora Travis: I guess you've been to a lot of big cities, Mr Yates?
- Rowdy Yates: Well, ah, I been to San Antone, a couple of others, New Orleans.
- Margaret Fletcher: Now I ain't got nothing left of your Daddy's.
- Dan Fletcher: You have his sons.
- Margaret Fletcher: I have you.
- Dan Fletcher: And Cal.
- Margaret Fletcher: No, not Cal.
- Dan Fletcher: Ma!
- Margaret Fletcher: Danny, I know I shouldn't ask you. If you could see your way clear to stay here.
- Dan Fletcher: If I stayed here there'd still be trouble between Cal and me.
- Margaret Fletcher: You're a drover, Mr Favor. How come you know how to build a house?
- Gil Favor: Well, I had to help put together one of the ones I grew up in. We'll have a warm, snug one up in no time up at all. Almost as good as the old one.
- Rowdy Yates: I should think a girl would be able to change his mind especially one that kiss like you did.
- Cal Fletcher: Why's everybody against me? What's wrong with me? I'm just as good as Dan. Maybe better.
- Margaret Fletcher: Cal, it ain't that. It's you can't tell somebody whom to love. Love, it happens in your heart. It ain't a thing you can't force.
- Cal Fletcher: I'll tell you something, he's not gonna get her.
- Flora Travis: He wanted to see something of the world.
- Rowdy Yates: Well, I guess he saw it, if you want to call it, looking at the southend of a bunch of northbound cattle.
