The original title of the episode was "Natural Born Rimmers", but this was altered due to the negative connotations this could imply.
The episode was a favourite of Chris Barrie because he enjoyed the doing the James Bond style opening sequence which Ace Rimmer does battle with the Nazi and rescues Princess Bonjella. Barrie had modelled the voice of Ace Rimmer after Sean Connery, who played James Bond.
Some of the artificial reality scenes had to be re-shot due to bad weather. Costume designer Howard Burden stood-in for Brian Cox who was unavailable for the reshoots.
The accident report from the set reveals injury to props man Nigel Pinhay, who was bitten by the hamster brought in for the dual Rimmer training scene.
Doug Naylor's son, Richard Naylor, who was just a boy at the time, was an extra in the crowd. He would later go on to himself become a producer of the series after Back to Earth (2009) and during Series X, XI and XII.
