It's the beginning of autumn. In New England, Tod and Linc are making their way south to Springfield, Massachusetts, before heading to their ultimate destination of New York City, where Tod is looking forward to the urban lifestyle once again, including seeing beautiful, cosmopolitan women. However, they are taking single lane rural dirt back roads, and ultimately get stuck and lost near Newfane, Vermont in a rainstorm. After meeting him, they decide to stay for a couple of weeks to help sixty-nine year old widower Arthur Perham on his farm. Linc is glad to stay as it evokes happy memories of his childhood on his now deceased grandfather's Texas farm, his grandfather who worked the land until he was seventy-two. Tod, however, is only convinced when he meets the beautiful Claire Leventhal, one of those cosmopolitan New Yorkers who is summering in the area. Arthur's way of life is a throw back to olden times, he now moving at a slow albeit steady and strong pace in life. Among his possessions, his pride is his pair of draft horses, which he rents to do work for others in the area. Soon after their stay, Tod and Linc learn that Arthur has been convinced that this should be his last season on the farm, and that he should move into the local seniors facility before winter sets in. Linc in particular does whatever he can to make sure that this last season is a memorable one for Arthur.
