Wanting to unwind after a hard day at their factory jobs in Savannah, Georgia, Tod and Linc decide to head to a bar for a drink. Their relaxation is shattered when Linc immediately recognizes a man in the bar, Camden Wilcox, upon who Linc begins to beat. Cam does not fight back and ends up not pressing charges against Linc. After letting his emotions settle, Linc eventually tells Tod about his and Cam's shared history. They were army mates in Vietnam, with an act of cowardice on Cam's part leading to the death of two of Linc's men, about which Linc will never forget or forgive, especially as Cam was discharged, but not dishonorably. What Linc does not yet know is that Cam has not been able to cope since, not being able to hold onto a job, and having no money to support his family, wife Edith and ten year old son Vic. Cam has turned to drinking, doing impressions for his bar mates for them to buy those drinks for him, which they do solely because he is a vet, one they know who was physically and emotionally wounded. But only his family knows that his cowardice extended well before the war. Meeting Vic may give Linc a slightly different perspective on the situation, Vic who feels he has to become the man his father never was or will be.
