I consider the "Retired Colourman" to be the best story of the last Sherlock Holmes story collection by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle - "the Case Book of Sherlock Holmes", which is often under-rated, because it differs significantly from the early works. Speaking about the movie episode in question - Douglas Wilmer makes really good Holmes, although bit unusual (as compared to other portraits) - I actually liked him more than Peter Cushing, because he is younger and thus more fits the role. The dialogs are mostly taken straight from the book with very few improvisations. The sets are good though not excellent. As this appears to be the only cinema take on the Retired Colourman (sadly), there is nothing to compare it with, but although good, and definitely recommended for a Holmes fan - it leaves a lot to be desired - like more realistic and perhaps scarier scenes, some parts might be stretched some cut, more of the emotional contact and of course a color version. Since the episodes were done in a hurry (as I've read) this is a really good work. (7/10 stars)
