Quotes
-
Dr. Donald Westphall : [to Dr. Gideon] Let me put this... in terms you can understand.
[drops pants and underwear]
Dr. Donald Westphall : You can kiss my ass, pal.
-
Dr. Mark Craig : What's this fairy tale about you quitting?
Dr. Donald Westphall : I was fired.
Dr. Mark Craig : Rumors are flying around the hospital, the staff's grumbling.
Dr. Donald Westphall : Yeah, they've always been good at that, haven't they?
Dr. Mark Craig : Look, Donald, swallow your pride, go to Gideon and apologize.
[Westphall throws his glass against the wall]
Dr. Mark Craig : Geez Louise, Donald.
Dr. Donald Westphall : Now look, Mark, I spent a lifetime apologizing, trying to smooth things over. There's just some people in this world that like to cause trouble. God knows why, I don't.
Dr. Mark Craig : You're talking about me, aren't you? About why Ellen's left.
Dr. Donald Westphall : Please.
Dr. Mark Craig : No, I know, I know. I scream, I pout, just to get my own way. But the reality is, I'm usually right.
Dr. Donald Westphall : Always.
Dr. Mark Craig : Don't be sarcastic, Donald. It doesn't suit you, it never has.
Dr. Donald Westphall : Do you know that ever since residency, whenever I've had a problem, you've managed to turn that discussion into something about yourself?
Dr. Mark Craig : Okay, fine, let's talk about you. You're furious you got canned.
Dr. Donald Westphall : I don't wanna leave.
Dr. Mark Craig : Well, then, it seems to me you have two choices, grandstand it, threaten to bring the hospital down with you, no idle boast, or you realize that this is probably the luckiest break you've ever gotten.
Dr. Donald Westphall : What are you talking about?
Dr. Mark Craig : How many times have you packed up this office? I can see the relief in your face. Admit it, you hate it here. The work depresses you, you feel guilty about being separated from your kids.
Dr. Donald Westphall : Okay, right.
Dr. Mark Craig : But you hang on. What for? To keep alive some childish memory of an era that's gone, a man that's gone. You don't owe Father Joseph McCabe your happiness.
Dr. Donald Westphall : You know, two weeks ago you were pushing me to stay.
Dr. Mark Craig : Well see, sometimes I am wrong. Personally, I hope you don't leave.
Dr. Donald Westphall : Why?
Dr. Mark Craig : I'll miss you. Ridiculous as it may sound, you're the best friend I have.
-
Dr. Daniel Auschlander : [trying to persuade Dr. Westphall not to quit] I met you in this very room. Sixteen years old. You were a bastard then and you're still one now.
Dr. Donald Westphall : Thanks very much.
Dr. Daniel Auschlander : Westphall... In Candide, the place where everyone lives is called Westphalia. The best of all possible worlds. A utopia... I hope you find yours, my old friend.
