A rare beast

A rare beast for TOTU - A good story that quickly catches your attention, good acting, an a nice twist at the end that proves he wasn't as stupid as they thought.

"I figured together, we sink or swim."

Warning: Spoilers
The attempt at misdirection for this episode is a little off. When limo driver William (Tom Smothers) opened the door to Marla Scanlon's (Joanne Lara) apartment, she was already dead. Which would mean William would have had to be there prior to this visit in order to strangle her. The episode's story line didn't offer any indication of free time for William, so it's a question mark as to when he could have done it. Also, I found it hard to accept that of the three men who were having an affair with Marla, all agreed to pay off William if he agreed to take the rap. Especially odd was Sutton (Patrick O'Neal), since in retrospect, he knew he wasn't the guilty party when making the proposal. Why stick his neck out for the other two guys? If one glosses over these factors, the story proceeds quite effectively to it's final conclusion, with William and wife Sara (Lois Smith) enjoying their dubious good fortune.

Another woeful episode.

A chauffeur tries to help out his wealthy employer, when a woman who's been blackmailing him is found dead.

Sadly it's another poor, later episode, guilty of one of the worst crimes of all, it's boring.

Dull as dishwater, chock full of stereotypes, this episode is definitely Tales of the Unexpected in its declining years. Below par acting, dull story, horrible twee music, and pace that makes you wonder if you're awake. Dire is a good word, and one I'd use to describe Proxy.

The location is nice, the house, grounds and estate used look wonderful, there I've found something positive to say.

2/10.

Murder of a Blackmailer - no one really hurt, they were acting

This nice little vignette moves along fairly smoothly to the twist at the end, within a program of less than half an hour, character development is tricky, but we do discover some details and undercurrents; three big players - a newspaper magnate, a judge and a politician - are being blackmailed by a woman they'd previously dallied with (she was obviously quite busy).

The chauffeur of the newspaper man discovers her strangled when he goes to pay his employers' $2,000 monthly payment to keep her quiet - a little strange he's able to get into her apartment to see her lying dead: who opened the door?

His partner, a servant in the same house, is keen to retire to a ranch in the Rockies (aren't we all - although it might be a little too quiet for some of us and some distance from the nearest McDonalds).

The acting and staging is somewhat theatrical, but it's an entertaining piece. Don't allow it to make you cynical about judges, politicians or newspaper magnates. If anything, it should make you suspicious of chauffeurs....
