- On the last day of World War II in the Pacific, hot-shot new Lieutenant Katell tries to make his mark on military history and receives a unique perspective on his actions.
- On August 6, 1945 - the last day of World War II - a forward platoon acting as artillery spotters get an eager and aggressive Lieutenant Katell. The artillery has been unable to dislodge a Japanese unit from a cave and Katell decides that the unit is going to attack. He suddenly finds himself in 1942 however, leading a Japanese unit that is about to attack Americans who are holed up in a cave. He looks into a mirror of sorts when his Japanese superior orders the destruction of the American stronghold. When he flashes back to 1945, he has second thoughts about the attack.—garykmcd / edited by Rob
- On 06 August 1945, an American platoon keeps under siege a group of about 20 or 30 Japanese wounded and starving soldiers in a cave under the command of the veteran Sgt. Causarano. Unexpectedly, the rookie Lt. Katell arrives and orders that the platoon shall attack the Japanese. His orders are questioned by Sgt. Causarano and his men that tells that all those deaths will not make the allied win the war, but Lt. Katel is resolute in his decision to kill the enemy. Out of the blue, the situation reverts and Lt. Katel is a Japanese lieutenant and the American team is trapped in the caves. What will happen next?—Claudio Carvalho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
- The Philippines, August 6, 1945. A battered platoon of American soldiers is directing artillery fire on a cave where Japanese soldiers have holed up during the last days of the war. Sgt. Causarano, their temporary commander, relays the news to HQ that the bombardment is useless and recommends that they bypass the cave.
HQ sends in Lt. Katell, a young commanding officer who is eager to kill the Japanese. Katell immediately plans an all-out frontal assault but Causarano warns against it. Katell snaps at one of the grumblers, Watkins, telling him to shape up and get with the plan. Causarano advises Katell to remove his officer insignia, since the Japanese target commanders. Katell does so and Causarano suggests they simply wait the Japanese out. Katell seems to think about it but then insists on going ahead with the attack. When the other men prove reluctant, an angry Katell snaps at them.
That night, the men prepare for the assault and Causarano once again warns against an attack. Katell wonders if he's battle-fatigued or just a coward, and asks the sergeant what he thinks of him. Causarano identifies him as an eager young officer who wants to prove himself and make sure no one thinks he's a cowardice by killing as many Japanese as he can. The sergeant wonders how many men have to die for Katell to prove himself, and the lieutenant insists that all of the enemy have to die.
Katell drops his binoculars, which shatter on the ground. He kneels to retrieve them... and a Japanese sergeant picks them up. The sergeant addresses Katell as Lt. Yamuri, who now has Japanese features. Katell runs away in fear and heads toward a cave... where an American soldier opens fire on him. Katell dive for cover and sees a shell casing box identifying the place as Corregidor. He returns to the camp where the sergeant, Yamazaki, congratulates him on his eagerness to lead the attack. Katell, confused, asks Yamazaki what year it is and the sergeant confirms it's May 4, 1942. Katell sits down heavily on the ground and his superior officer, a Japanese captain, demands to know if he's ill. Katell has no choice but to play along and says that he's recovered and ready to fight. The Japanese captain orders the men to attack the American cave in five minutes, and is unconcerned with taking any prisoners. Yamazaki notes there are wounded soldiers in the cave. Upon learning this, Katell suggests to his superior that they bypass the cave. The captain refuses, saying that the enemy must be destroyed completely. Hearing his own words echoed back at him, Katell hesitates and the captain slaps him and orders the others to move out. Katell asks the captain if killing the soldiers in the cave will change anything. The captain insists, just like Katell did earlier, that the enemy must be annihilated. Katell reaches over to pick up his broken binoculars... and finds himself back in his own body in his own camp.
As Katell tries to make sense of the entire thing, HQ calls with orders to drop back. The Americans have dropped a nuclear bomb on Japan and believe the enemy will surrender shortly. As they prepare to leave, Causarano notes that maybe someday Katell will have a chance to kill all the enemy wants. A changed Katell hopes to God it never happens.
