Quotes

  • Sheriff Fred Miller : 'Cause you wouldn't have brought him in if you'd shot him. Where'd you find him?

Flint McCullough : Not far from the train. I was coming into town to visit an old friend of mine.

Sheriff Fred Miller : You know somebody here?

Flint McCullough : Yeah, I grew up with the dead man's wife.

Sheriff Fred Miller : Well, now. Don't that beat all. Old friend of Allie's, huh? Riding the wagon train all the way from the East, run smack into a dead husband on the trail. Kinda funny how things happen sometimes, isn't it.

Flint McCullough : Yeah, it sure is.

Sheriff Fred Miller : I don't suppose you'd like to be the one to tell Allie what happened?

Flint McCullough : No, I wouldn't like to but someone's got to tell her.

  • Sheriff Fred Miller : Funny about brothers sometimes. Both have the same upbringing, one turns out good, the other goes sour. One has position, respect, pretty wife. Maybe it's the pretty wife that hurts.

  • Sheriff Fred Miller : The Justises are a fine old family. Well, that's a good place to look for a black sheep. The question in my mind is: which one's the black sheep, Lou or Bert?

  • Sheriff Fred Miller : Reminds me of a story I heard once about a fella called the Headless Horseman. Folks all swore he was riding around the countryside at night carrying his head under his arm. But he wasn't. It was just a pumpkin.

Flint McCullough : You think there's a pumpkin in this?

Sheriff Fred Miller : Somehow. I guess more than one man's been convicted for what it looked like he was doing.

  • Sheriff Fred Miller : He shot Justis. I've got enough on McCullough to throw a little lynching party for him.

Bill Hawks : Lynch McCullough? For what?

Sheriff Fred Miller : He shot Justis.

Bill Hawks : Who told you that?

Sheriff Fred Miller : Well, I've been asking some questions down the line here. Seems a lot of folks saw it.

Bill Hawks : They tell you why?

    Sheriff Fred Miller : Yeah.

Bill Hawks : Since when do you hang a man for killing a horse thief?

Sheriff Fred Miller : When the horse thief's not a horse thief. Lou Justis never stole a thing in his life.

Bill Hawks : He did this time. I saw him steal the horse with my own eyes, just as plain as day.

Sheriff Fred Miller : Yeah, that's what a lot of folks say.

  • Sheriff Fred Miller : I knew if I let you birddog him long enough, he'd corner himself. I don't know how anyone could hate Lou that much. Not even him.

Flint McCullough : He's done a pretty good job.

Sheriff Fred Miller : I suppose the more you do for some folks, the more they hate you for it.

  • Sheriff Fred Miller : Because that the kind of man you are. You've got a conscience. I know what's going on through your head. You think you made a mistake. You think you shot too soon. You're the kind of man that has to find out.
