- Wycliffe and his team investigate the murder of Tony Miller, manager of the Bottrell estate. He had been there for about 7 years and was well-liked from all accounts. Soon after however the Bottrells maid, Lizzie Biddick, goes missing and it is unlikely that this is just a coincidence. The police eventually find her backpack in a well along with several risqué photos of Lizzie in various states of undress. As they dig deeper, the police begin to uncover several closely guarded secrets. Sir Hugh Bottrell and Tony were lovers and his brother Guy Bottrill is having an affair with his Sir Hugh's wife. Local solicitor Steven Lander is known as an avid amateur photographer, including sessions with nude models. Miller and Lizzie were close friends leading Wycliffe to suspect they may have shared an as yet unknown secret someone did not wish revealed.—garykmcd
