Here She Comes... Miss Amphipolis
Prismark1024 September 2020
An episode of Xena that satirises beauty contests. Some 25 years later it can also be seen to be making a statement on Trans issues.

Salmoneus returns and is now running a beauty contest. Miss Known World and someone is trying to sabotage it with the contestants finding themselves in danger. The fallout could lead to a war between the sponsors.

Xena enters as a contestant as Miss Amphipolis. Gabrielle pretends to be her sponsor. Miss Artiphys is a contestant who is a transexual character rather than a man in drag who hopes is not found out.

The episode was made at a time when shows like Baywatch were in their prime. The opening scenes features women running on a beach.

It is a silly fun episode that allows Lucy Lawless to camp it up and maybe play up her own sex symbol image. It works better than it should had.

Xena goes undercover in a beauty pageant. Fun episode.

Warning: Spoilers
Xena and Gabrielle show up to help Salmoneus at what appears to be an island nation. He's hosting a beauty pageant and there have been attempts on the lives of some of the contestants. Unfortunately, their boyfriends are warlords who have formed a shaky truce with each other after a terrible war there. Now these new attacks threaten their peace treaty.

Xena looks pretty good with blonde hair. No surprise as Lucy's hair is naturally ash blonde. I love that Xena realizes she has misjudged the contestants later. They aren't bimbos, but real human beings who went through a horrible war and want to better their lives.

How cool was that scene of Xena practicing her "talent" out on the beach? Loved it. Love all her dresses, They looked amazing on her. Oh, except for that bad dress, which Xena fixed up.

Gabrielle was funny. She's undercover as a Marquesa. Chiffon? Chartreuse? Oh boy, this is such a funny campy fantasy show. She really got into Xena winning it even though she felt beauty pageants were exploitative and degrading.

The episode features a trans character Miss Artiphys. Played by a trans woman. Xena accepts her and doesn't judge. And keeps her secret. This is all pretty amazing for 1997. I'm not sure but this may have been one of the first times on TV that a trans character had a significant guest role and was portrayed in a positive way. By an actual trans person, no less.

Love all the interactions Xena had with the contestants and Gabrielle had with the warlords. These were fun. I got a kick out of Miss Skiros who was kind of mean to Xena. Lol.

Love the stage setting and all the rehearsal scenes, and presentation scenes. Again, lots of fun. Especially seeing Xena up there.

Salmoneus adds his usual funny charm. He even sings.

Love the the way Xena totally humiliated Lord Clairon who was behind the attacks. He thought she(whom he still doesn't know was Xena) was nothing more than a pretty airhead. She really let him have it. "Are we having fun yet?" "Oops." "Don't hate me 'cause I'm beautiful." All while acting almost sort of ditzy and ultra-feminine. Just perfect with little smackdowns. Lol.

Anyway, really loved this one and had fun watching it. 10/10.

Salute to Xena - A 25th Anniversary Review
skullface202030 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Xena gets an urgent message from an old friend about a fragile peace that is in serious danger. In order to protect the innocent lives involved, Xena and Gabrielle will have to go undercover and put on one hell of a show.

SYNOPSIS

Xena and Gabrielle arrive at a beach community due to a distress call that requested help. Everything seems ok, but there are tracks of a war wagon that can be found in the sand. Xena mentions how this area had seen a great deal of warfare until a peace treaty was signed by multiple factions about a year ago. Suddenly there are a bunch of scantily clad women running from some creepy bros. Xena of course fights off the creeps, and she finds old Salmoneus, the greedy huckster, thanking her. He is the one who sent the distress call. Turns out that he is producing a beauty contest as part of a one year anniversary celebration for the peace treaty. He needs help keeping the peace since he feels as though someone is trying to sabotage everything. Who could this be? Xena is on the case, and she'll have to pose as a contestant in this all-female pageant. She'll be Miss Amphipolis, and Gabrielle will pose as her wealthy sponsor the Marquessa.

The women in this contest are quite competitive, and they don't exactly welcome Miss Amphipolis with open arms at first. Everyone of them is in it to win it. Gabrielle, posing as the Marquessa, finds that the men sponsoring the contestants are kind of simple minded and shallow. Furthermore, they don't really trust each other as the peace accord binding their armies is fragile. Does someone want to sabotage this entire pageant? If so, why? Xena discovers that the contestants each have their own reasons for being in the pageant. Some are doing it to please their wealthy boyfriends/sponsors, and others are doing it with the hopes of winning so that they can help feed their home villages. The recent war was long and put a great burden on the communities represented by the contestants.

The pageant begins and everyone is doing very well. However, Gabrielle is in the recurring meetings of the sponsors between pageant performances, and she knows that patience is wearing thin. War could easily break out if any of the sponsors feels as though his contestant was unfairly robbed of the crown. Xena saves the day when a sabotage attempt nearly kills a contestant on stage, and she realizes that it was the host of the pageant who wanted to end the peace. He had been making good money during the war, but the peace accord ended that. In his failed attempt to kill Xena he is overheard by the various sponsors who were tied up and hidden in the room so as to hear his confession. Xena and Gabrielle save the day, and the contestants decide to step down and not compete against each other. Their hearts were not in it, and they wanted to be honest with themselves and everyone else.

NOTES

Xena protects the identity of a man playing a woman in the pageant; a big moment for network tv in 1997. Salmoneus does a good job singing while hosting the pageant, and Gabrielle has a convincing accent while playing the Marquessa. Lucy Lawless is a previous winner of the Miss New Zealand contest, and it shows in her performance as Miss Amphipolis

Enter: Miss Messini, Doge of Messini, Miss Artiphys
