ECMO stands for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, a type of cardiopulmonary bypass used when a patient's heart and lungs cannot adequately oxygenate the blood. It works by pumping the patient's blood out of their body and into a machine that mimics the function of the lungs by removing carbon dioxide and adding oxygen, then pumping the blood back into the body. It was mainly used on children because they have a smaller blood volume and are less susceptible to the stress it puts on the body; however, recent advancements allow ECMO to be used on adults more frequently.
According to this episode, Cuddy and Wilson are left-handed.
