The Skipper's allergic to Gilligan
kevinolzak18 June 2016
"Allergy Time" finds the Skipper suffering from a terrible allergy, the sheer force of his sneezing and wheezing enough to knock over a palm tree! An examination by the Professor reveals no tropical diseases, a mystery that has yet to be diagnosed. Nothing belonging to the girls or the Howells get a negative reaction, but the moment Gilligan gets near the poor Skipper's in agony! After Gilligan is forced to move in with the Professor he too begins to sneeze, followed by everybody else, so it's off to the jungle to be alone. Imagine, just a photograph of Gilligan is enough to set off the Skipper! Alan Hale's tour de force performance may be his very best, the result being one of the series' funniest outings.

THE NEXT SNEEZE YOU HEAR.... RUN!
tcchelsey20 August 2023
It had to happen sometime. The familiar gag that someone is allergic to someone else, right? In this case, it's the sneezy skipper, who thinks he's allergic to Gilligan. Heaven forbid! The proverbial chain reaction begins when the everyone starts sneezing... so is Gilligan causing a mass sneeze fest???

Veteran Bud Grossman wrote this episode, who did a lot of stories for MAUDE and THREES COMPANY. I most DO agree with the last reviewer it's inconceivable -- all of a sudden-- the skipper is allergic to Gilligan. That said, let's all remember this is a goofy show, with even goofier situations, so just let it ride and play itself out. Bottom line, it's fun to watch everybody go nuts. And this is the skipper's show all the way.

Hat's off to the wardrobe department and the professor's polka dot pajamas! Also, look for the gigantic wood syringe(?) the professor has assembled to give Gilligan a shot? You often wonder, whatever happened to these way cool inventions the production crew came up with.

That syringe has to be the best ever prop! Another family show, no guest stars or animals, just the cast doing their thing and loving it. It shows.

From SEASON 2 remasterd dvd box set.

Gilligan is allergic to a decent plot.
Ralphkram8 May 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Lazy writing, major plot holes, a simple premise that has been done better on a dozen different shows, and a cheap resolution combine to make this another misfire that continues the sophomore slump. Watching the castaways sneeze over and over again can only go so far. It certainly doesn't make for the most fun or entertaining way to past the time. It's more like a twenty-four minute commercial for Kleenex.

Out of nowhere, the Skipper has a sneezing fit that he just can't shake. The Professor rules out tropical diseases and moves on to more common items around the island. Not to worry, though; the Skip makes an amazing overnight recovery. He's fully recovered...until Gilligan shows up with a random duck egg and causes a complete relapse. The Professor runs a quick study that is completely unscientific and, in order to kick start the plot, immediately jumps to the conclusion that the Skip is allergic to his little buddy. Even a fully washed and scrubbed Gilligan fails to stop the sneezing.

The Professor brings the other castaways into the plot by conducting another brief test where they're brought in one at a time for a blindfolded Skip to sniff. It's easily the best and funniest bit of the entry. Everyone is cleared but our lead, so the next rash and illogical step is for him to clear out of their hut and find lodging elsewhere.

Just like in Hi Fi Gilligan, he gets passed around that night from hut to hut. All of his temporary bunk mates mysteriously come down with the same sneezing and itching symptoms as the Skip. More familiar ground is covered; Gilligan decides to be noble and head once again to the other side of the island to live out his remaining days as a hermit.

At first the others are relieved at Gilligan's gesture. All it takes, though, is a scolding by the Skip to turn them around. They locate Gilligan in that same cave he's been using for a refuge since he was a lone wolf in It's Magic. Ginger's gentle art of persuasion fails to draw him out, and the others don't fare any better.

The episode would logically grind to a halt here, so the Professor concocts an antidote on the fly to hasten Gilligan's return. To keep our lead around, the others all have to receive shots. As quick as that plot thread is created, it's over in the blink of an eye, as Gilligan reveals the source of the sneezing in a lazy, illogical resolution that doesn't pass the smell test.

COCONOTES:

Major plot hole: it's pretty far-fetched that the Skipper is suddenly allergic to Gilligan, given their history together going back to at least World War II. It's equally far-fetched that the other castaways are allergic as well, especially since they were standing in line with him with no problem waiting to go into the Skip's hut.

The Skip sneezing so hard he blows down a palm tree is chuckle-worthy.

Love that medium shot of a down Gilligan exiting the clearing for the other side of the island, accompanied by those forlorn musical notes.

Like the Professor's pajamas.

Major plot hole: Gilligan claims the oil in the papaya nuts causes his sneezing, but, if he's been wearing the hair tonic all along, why wasn't he sneezing earlier?
