Episode 8 "A Chicken in Every Pot" begins the second season
On November 3 1992, Democrat Bill Clinton was elected President, and THE POWERS THAT BE began its second season four nights later, with two episodes broadcast in a one hour time slot. The Clintons would be mentioned in nearly all the remaining entries, and this one starts off with Senator Bill Powers bidding good morning to Charlotte the maid: "Nothing makes a man sleep better than knowing that after 12 long years, there's gonna be a Democrat in the White House again!" (to massive audience applause). Margaret would like to insinuate herself into the Clintons' inner circle, seeking to make her husband Ambassador to St. James, while Jordan simply wants the incoming President to make her Senator lover the majority whip (he has won reelection over the wheelchair-bound Joe Bowman). Margaret believes that supplying chicken salad sandwiches for a gathering of Hillary Clinton's friends will help her, even though Charlotte warns that it might be spoiled. Bradley is the first to congratulate Margaret on what appears to be a resounding success (Bradley: "you schmoozing genius, I'm proud simply to know you!" Sophie to Jordan: "I think he has finally reached his peak, he can't suck up any more than he has right now, I mean there is literally no more up to which he could suck!"). Caitlyn realizes that she may not be able to go to England with her parents because of her husband Theodore (Caitlyn: "Theodore, it's all your fault!" Theodore: "probably..." Caitlyn: "if it weren't for your stupid job we'd get to go to England with Mummy and Daddy, why do you have to be a Congressman?" Theodore: "to get to the other side!"). An outbreak of food poisoning leads Margaret to try to put the blame on someone else, especially after Hillary herself is rushed to the hospital (Margaret: "I've accomplished my goal...I have finally made a name for myself in Washington, I will go down in the rogues' gallery of history...John Wilkes Booth...John Hinckley...Squeaky Fromme...and Chicken Margaret!"). Bradley himself succumbs to the symptoms, occasionally emerging to fall down the stairs (Bradley: "I wanted to spend my final moments among loved ones!" Jordan: "keep looking!" Bradley: "you can't hurt me any more Jordan, I've seen the other side and you weren't there!"). With the Clintons due to arrive in her home, the distraught Margaret wonders what will happen to her: "has he found out? He's coming after me, I forgot he's Southern, they settle their own debts!" In a plot line carried over from the first season finale, the married Theodore excitedly professes his love for Charlotte, who primps her hair whenever she sees him (Theodore: "followed your alluring aroma, what is that intoxicating scent?" Charlotte: "that would be chicken sir!" Theodore: "you're like a rare golden apple on the tree of passion, all wrapped up in a little...maid thing!" Charlotte: "and you...you'd be a Greek god if you were a...Greek!"). At the height of passion, he grabs her hands, only to be rejected (Charlotte: "oh please sir, it's just too painful...you'd better go!"). Once he's out the door, Charlotte opens her hand, revealing the tacks that were digging into it!
