Shimon Dotan: 'It's nothing else than a powder keg. And as often with historic changes, it could blow up overnight.

The Romanian-born filmmaker, who moved to Israel as a child and served in the military there before forging a cinematic career, now lives in New York, where he teaches at Cuny - but still takes a keen interest in Israel "because it's a part of my life it's a part of my identity".

After premiering at the 2014 Toronto Film Festival in the Galas Program, via Cohen Media, the double 40th César Award nominated The New Girlfriend received a limited theatrical release a year later for a meager box-office take just under one hundred and fifty thousand. Based on a novel by Ruth Rendell, Francois Ozon’s playful subversion of gender dynamics hinges on camp, recalling a legion of vintage queer classics from decades ago (as well as Ozon’s own darker, challenging early filmography when the auteur was referred to as a terrible enfant). As politically correct agendas continue to be applied to queer characters, engulfing deliberations of appropriate representation, items such as Ozon’s film have become a rarity in the English language market. But there’s a perverse mixture of dark comedy and psychological unrest portrayed here, and Ozon gleefully captures a neglected energy of queer cinema once again relegated to the periphery of good taste.

Dotan previously won the Sundance Film Festival Special Jury Award for his documentary "Hot House" in 2007. Dotan's film is the first of its kind as it looks at the historical, religious and personal ramifications of Israeli citizens expanding communities into the already-occupied territories of the West Bank, where they frequently come into direct conflict with the region's Palestinian inhabitants. These settlers have been viewed by some as fulfilling the righteous vanguard of modern Zionism, and by others as overzealous squatters who are inhibiting the possibility of peace. Throughout the documentary, Dotan follows both extremes between the debate for continued inhabitancy and immediate withdrawal of the Jewish...

The Skin I Live In: Ozon’s Exquisite New Exploration of Gender Subversion
For his most playful and delightfully creepy film in years, Francois Ozon adapts crime writer Ruth Rendell’s short story for his latest, The New Girlfriend. Rendell has long supplied a bevy of European filmmakers with some of their most memorable titles, including Claude Miller’s Alias Betty (2001), Pedro Almodovar’s Live Flesh (1997), and perhaps, most notably, Claude Chabrol’s La Ceremonie (1994) and The Bridesmaid (2004). An excellent purveyor of strange and complicated relationships that often involve sublimated identities and tendencies that often lead to deadly scenarios, Rendell serves as an excellent template for Ozon with material that recalls the sexually transgressive explorations of his early career.
Claire (Anais Demoustier) and Laura (Isild Le Besco) have been inseparable friends since childhood. They’ve followed nearly the same life trajectory as well, both marrying handsome young men and what not.

Earlier this week we launched our Film Geeks at the Theatre strand on the site. As the title suggests, it’s a(n irregular) series of articles that look at theatre through the eyes of those of us who only, really know movies. It seems only appropriate to follow this up with a review of The Hot House, the John Simm-starring production that’s taken over from Macbeth at the Trafalgar Studios.
The entire cast of The Hot House are exceptional. As good as one might possibly expect from the cast of a West-End play. Similarly, the staging is equally accomplished. On the face of it, interpreting the ‘Hot House’ title literally, and turning the Trafalgar Studios into a something resembling the Palm House at Kew is a risk, but it’s one that pays off. Unfortunately this doesn’t transfer into an enjoyable experience.

New York — A celebration of Dave Brubeck's life and music turned into an ode to joy as family, friends and fans paid tribute to the groundbreaking pianist and composer who became the best known ambassador of jazz to the world.
Brubeck died Dec. 5, a day before his 92nd birthday, and a private funeral was held near his home in Wilton, Conn., shortly afterward. Los Angeles (AP) -- Everybody's thinkin' about Frank Ocean - but his main competition Kanye West and Jay-z took home two early Grammy Awards.
They won best rap song and best rap performance in the pre-telecast awards Sunday for the song "N----s in Paris" from their "Watch the Throne" collaboration, joining Skrillex, Esperanza Spalding, Chick Corea and Matt Redman atop the pre-telecast awards show toteboard.

Other early winners included Rihanna, Beyonce, Taylor Swift and Mumford & Sons.
Ocean is a cause celebre and the man with the momentum as Sunday's Grammy Awards. One of six top nominees with six nominations apiece, Ocean - the 25-year-old R&B singer turned cultural talking point - will have the music world's attention.

New York — Chick Corea took the unusual step of releasing four major recordings last year covering a wide gamut of music – everything from solo piano improvisations to a concerto for jazz quintet and chamber orchestra.
Now, the 71-year-old jazz pianist and composer is in the unusual position of competing against himself in two categories at the Feb. 10 awards show in Los Angeles.
"People in the music business say don't make too many records because they'll compete against one another," Corea said in a phone interview. "Well, it's exactly what's happening, but I'm very happy about it because what I love to do is making a lot of music."
His album "Hot House," the latest chapter in his 40-year partnership with vibraphonist Gary Burton, has three nominations – best jazz instrumental album, improvised jazz solo for the title track and instrumental composition for "Mozart Goes Dancing."

The Communications Council has opened talks with several of Australia’s biggest public relations agencies with a view to the organisation widening its remit to include PR, Mumbrella can reveal.
If the move takes place, it would raise questions about the position of the Public Relations Institute of Australia, which is currently the main PR industry body.
Mumbrella has learned that around a dozen PR agency bosses met with Communications Council CEO Margaret Zabel on Friday. She presented them with a vision for what the organisation could do for PR agencies including representation and training.
The talks began as a result of criticisms of the Pria expressed in a Mumbrella video interview with the management of PR agency Mango late last year.

"The Adventures of Tintin" dominated the nominations but it was "Rango" that received the most trophies at the 10th Visual Effects Society (Ves) awards. Stan Lee received the the Lifetime Achievement Award and visual effects pioneer Douglas Trumbull received the George Melies Award. Patton Oswalt hosted the event held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Antonion Banderas, Lou Ferrigno, director Chris Miller, Marc Webb, and Jennifer Yuh Nelson presented awards. But the surprise appearance by Martin Scorsese was the highlight of the evening.

HollywoodNews.com:Directors Guild of America President Taylor Hackford today announced the DGA’s nominees for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Television and Commercials for the year 2011.
?The caliber of work being done on television these days is incredible, and our director nominees in each category are an indispensable element to the success of every project — establishing and enhancing the vision and tone, eliciting outstanding performances and furthering the narrative arc through their creative choices,? said Hackford. ?That they are able to create excellence regardless of obstacles like tighter schedules and in an environment in which audiences have more entertainment options to choose from — is a true testament to the importance of directorial skill in television.?
The winners will be announced at the 64th Annual DGA Awards Dinner on Saturday, January 28, 2012 at the Grand Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland in Los Angeles.

The visual effects that we are seeing in movies these days are absolutely mind blowing. At this point it doesn't seem like there's any excuse for a film to have bad visual effects unless the people hired lack talent, or the studio is keeping the cash in their pockets.
There's a lot of good nomination this year such as Captain America, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean 4, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Out of all of these I think that Planet of the Apes might take home the top prize, those apes were incredibly freaky looking. Weta did an amazing job with this movie, and out of all the other nominations this was the movie I was most impressed by. What are your thoughts? What movie did you think have the best visual effect in 2011?

Does design have a role at the World Economic Forum? Robert Fabricant's second report from Dar es Salaam.
My first full day at the World Economic Forum on Africa starts off well. I run into John Ledgard by the elevators at my hotel. John covers Africa for The Economist, and is one of handful of people that I know here. Might be the last semi-familiar face I will see till dinner time. From here on out I will need to explain what I do and why I am here to a pretty diverse audience, few of whom will have any context for "design" much less for "frog design." I better come up with a simple way to introduce myself or it will be a long day.
What is Design? My first stop is a breakfast for the Global Growth Companies, a relatively new class of Wef companies of which Frog is one.
