Breaking through the shell of a troubled boy.
mark.waltz27 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
David Collins has begun to trust Victoria as his Nanny, and expresses his hatred of Roger, even going as far as wishing that he was dead. Victoria's attempts to get Roger to pick up some magazines fail, and Elizabeth expresses concern over Roger's meeting with Burke. It's the continuation of a summer thunder storm, giving atmosphere and some gloom to a dark episode where Roger suggests coldly that Victoria resigns. That is nutered by Elizabeth's desire to confide her own fears to Victoria, setting up a strong relationship between the two women. Meanwhile, Roger's car swerves off the road, giving a nice cliffhanger to the third week, something that the damaged David predicted.

Filler episode

Warning: Spoilers
Episode 15 is very much one of those 'filler' episodes in which very little happens. David is the focus of attention here and has some childish histrionics as it turns out that his relationship with his father is very poor indeed. Things end on a twist and a cliffhanger which is laughably overdone. There's little atmosphere or mystery overall.

"Give People a Chance"

Warning: Spoilers
Continuing to worry about his father putting him away in an institution, David (David Henesy) resists Vicki (Alexandra Moltke) when she attempts to make progress with her young ward. David continues to call out to his absent mother. Acting nervous and jumpy, Liz (Joan Bennett) warns Roger (Louis Edmonds) to stay away from Burke, but he intends accept his adversary's invitation for a drink at the Blue Whale. Still, Roger thinks it's possible Burke is "hiding a couple of daggers behind his back." Before retiring for the evening, the residents of Collinwood receive bad news...

This was the series' first big cliffhanger ending. The shocking ending, a serial staple, was a common Friday occurrence on daytime soap operas. "Dark Shadows" would eventually take the practice to an extreme, with daily cliffhangers becoming routine. This one works well, and includes more fine location footage - the Collins grounds, Roger's Ford Mustang, and David looking out his bedroom window. David's clothing is not matched, however, and the last scene is arguably unnecessary (at this point). David's emotionally disturbed condition and Vicki's task are clearly defined...
