The Informers is based on a 1994 collection of short stories, also called The Informers, by American novelist Brett Easton Ellis. The stories were adapted for the movie by Ellis and novelist Nicholas Jarecki.
No. Although the original story collection featured vampires, they were eliminated from the story when Australian film-maker Gregor Jordan took over direction of the movie.
It is implied in the movie that Tim's father was never around when he was growing up and, after a long time of absence, decided to try to reconnect with his son by taking him on a "father-son" trip to Hawaii. What made Tim upset was that his father was trying to make it up for years of absence in one trip. The father was trying to reconnect with him but had no idea who his son was and didn't know how to deal with him, a consequence for not being around him in his growing years.
