Introducing The Pink Panther
The Pink Panther to me is one of animation's mot iconic characters. DePatie-Freleng Enterprises' output was very hit and miss, or at least post-1970 it was, especially the later theatrical series. With hits such as Pink Panther and the Ant and the Aardvark, and duds such as Crazylegs Crane. For me, The Pink Panther on the whole was the studio's best theatrical series, though The Inspector and Ant and the Aardvark ones come close. It did become very variable from the mid-70s onwards, but the 60s-early 70s output contained some of the studio's best work.
Of which 'The Pink Phink' is one of them. It is the cartoon that introduced the audience to the Pink Panther and won a deserved Oscar, and it is still one of the best of the series. Perhaps even a contender for the best, with no dullness or cheapness, even when things are kept simple it was effectively so and doesn't feel too much so. A perfect example of what the series was all about and what made it such a winner, while having so many good things on its own. If asked whether 'The Pink Phink' is recommended, this reviewer says yes without any hesitation.
Everything works. The animation is simple but the colours are very pretty and the backgrounds don't look cheap. The music is very catchy, the main theme sticks in your head and in an infectious way rather than an annoying way. The jazzy orchestration is equally good.
As well as well-animated and scored, 'Pink Phink' is very funny. The story, with a unique concept for the Pink Panther and the studio, like the animation is simple, but never to the point that it is predictable or dull. The gags are very creative and entertaining, never feeling repetitive. The back and forth never gets old and feels fresh every time, because of how well the cartoon manages to give the creative concept variety. True, you do get the basic idea of what to expect with the other gags from the first gag, but each gag is dealt with in a fresh way so that is in no way a bad thing.
Pink Panther himself is very cool and proof that you can be funny without having to say anything.
Overall, the introductory Pink Panther cartoon is still one of his best. 10/10.
