This podcast focuses on Criterion’s Eclipse Series of DVDs. Hosts David Blakeslee and Trevor Berrett give an overview of each box and offer their perspectives on the unique treasures they find inside. In this first episode of a two-part series, David and Trevor are joined by Pablo Knote to discuss three films (I am Waiting, Rusty Knife and Take Aim at the Police Van) from Eclipse Series 17: Nikkatsu Noir.
About the films:
From the late 1950s through the sixties, wild, idiosyncratic crime movies were the brutal and boisterous business of Nikkatsu, the oldest film studio in Japan. In an effort to attract youthful audiences growing increasingly accustomed to American and French big-screen imports, Nikkatsu began producing action potboilers (mukokuseki akushun, or “borderless action”) that incorporated elements of the western, comedy, gangster, and teen-rebel genres. This bruised and bloody collection represents a standout cross section of what Nikkatsu had to offer,...

Yesterday afternoon, the long list of countries submitting films for contention in Best Foreign Language Feature at the Oscars was revealed. With 85 movies in play, this is a record breaking group. Honestly, from what I could see, only three snubs seemed to be here, which was Belgium not choosing The Unknown Girl, Korea not choosing The Handmaiden, and Romania not choosing Graduation. Aside from those, all of the expected suspects are here for consideration. That gives us the first bit of information in trying to narrow down what will be nominated. My predictions will have to be updated (look for that either at the end of this week or next week), but that will be taken care of. For now, we just know the players. What you’ll see below are more contenders than ever before. Among the higher profile titles are Canada’s It’s Only the End of the World from Xavier Dolan,...

The official submissions for the foreign language Oscar are in from around the world, and the Academy has deemed a record 85 eligible to compete. Last year, 81 submissions were released theatrically in their home countries between October 1, 2014 and September 30, 2015. (This year’s deadline for submissions was October 3, 2016.)
Several Academy foreign committees comprised of members from all the branches will whittle down the films to a shortlist of nine and finally, five Oscar nominees. (Last year’s winner was Cannes prize-winner “Son of Saul,” directed by Hungarian Lazlo Nemes.) Many countries pick films that do well on the festival circuit as their strongest Oscar contender; others do not.
Politics often intervene: Brazil’s submission was expected to be Cannes competition film “Aquarius,” starring Sonia Braga, but it was embroiled in controversy over filmmaker Kleber Mendonça Filho’s support of outgoing impeached president Dilma Rousseff. As we've noted many times the Official Foreign Film Submission List generally contains at least one surprise when Oscar announces it -either a switcheroo from a country who had second thoughts about their submitted film or a disqualification or a film we hadn't yet heard of. We don't know the date but it's any time in the next week or so. At the moment the list is 86 wide (a record if it holds!) thanks to the last few films we know of to announce including Costa Rica's romantic dramedy About Us, Malaysia's autism drama Redha, and the biopic Xuan Zang from China which is about a famous monk during the Tang Dynasty. That one sure looks pretty.
If you haven't looked at the Oscar charts in a while take a gander. We'll obviously break it down in several fun ways when the official list is announced.

Best Song Oscar 2016 contender 'Fifty Shades of Grey,' with Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan. 74 entries in contention for 2016 Best Song Academy Award 'Tis the season for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to announce the semi-finalists – in some instances, the semi-semi-finalists – for the Academy Awards. Today, the Academy released the list of songs eligible for the 2016 Best Song – or rather, Best Original Song – Oscar. There are 74 contenders, with titles ranging from “Happy” and “I'll See You in My Dreams” to “Hypnosis” and “Bhoomiyilenghanumundo.” Curiously, apart from the inevitable animated and/or kiddie flicks (Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip, Anomalisa, Pan, Shaun the Sheep Movie, Home, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge out of Water, etc.) most of this year's contenders are songs from smaller movies and Bollywood/South Asian releases. Exceptions include Sam Taylor-Johnson's Fifty Shades of Grey, Ryan Coogler's Creed, Kenneth Branagh's...

Alex & Sierra shot to superstardom when they were crowned the season 3 winners of The X-Factor USA. The twosome proved they had staying-power when they released their debut album, It’s About Us, last fall.
The singing-songwriting real-life couple is gearing up to hit the road with Andy Grammer on the “Good Guys and a Girl Tour,” kicking off on Feb. 24th in Seattle.
The pop duo's current single, "Little Do You Know," is a heartbreaking tune penned by 24-year-old Sierra and her girlfriends – and only the second song she ever wrote. The inspiration? Her relationship with 23-year-old Alex.

Staying relevant. It is a fear actors, directors, content creators, and to be honest, most human beings grapple with constantly. The more than half-century year-old Sunset Boulevard exemplified this fear in the delusional Gloria Swanson. And while I’m sure this obsession is a random extraneous facet of the greatly evolved human consciousness, it may be spin-off on our desire to survive.
This wasn’t part of Birdman. This was Emma Stone actually telling Mk the truth.
“If you build it they will come.” While that may have been true at one time, many have since ‘built’ and the audience has been spread thinly. We see the loss of audience at the Elks Theatre weekly. And while the theater hasn’t changed, I understand audiences’ needs have. It’s clear there are more and more forms of entertainment available instantly, and cost and convenience is absolutely the apogee of necessity in the realm of entertainment.

For at least the past few years, we have covered the Toronto After Dark Film Festival annually. Jeff Konopka attends the festival every year, and he usually brings some really good coverage back with him. I am always jealous when he’s there, because I’m listening to the footage that he has recorded, hanging out in a crowded bar talking with filmmakers, as well as other journalists attending the event. It sounds like a lot of fund, and I’d love to make the trip one year. Some of my favorite recent films were shown at Toronto After Dark. Cheap Thrills, Motivational Growth, The Machine, We Are What We Are, Resolution, The Battery, one of my all-time favorite films, Some Guy Who Kills People, and much, much more. Recently, the first 10 films for the 2014 festival were announced, and among them were some highly anticipated films. I will list them all below,...

“So Blake Lively just launched her Goop” is how someone explained Blake Lively’s new website to me a few hours ago. Now, I am not a cynical person. I believe in giving everything at least half a chance. I can acknowledge that Goop is a thing that people care about, even though nobody can figure out whether to spell it “Goop” or “goop” or “Goop.”
And to the extent that every generation needs their Goop–just like every generation needs a hero or a Highlander or a defining entry in the MarioKart series–Blake Lively seems like someone who could pull that off.

Though he’s not really known for his music video work, Spike Lee has directed over a dozen music vids (they are listed on Wikipedia, fyi). Perhaps his most notable are the dual version of Michael Jackson’s “They Don't Care About Us” and Public Enemy's "Fight The Power" (in which he has a cameo at the end), but he has also directed videos by Prince (who scored all of "Girl 6"), Arrested Development, Bruce Horsnby, Branford Marsalis, Guru featuring Donald Byrd, Curtis Mayfield, Naughty by Nature and Fishbone, among others (the clip he did for the Crooklyn Dodgers uses his trademark dollyshot too). He also directed a clip for Mau Maus, the fake gangster rap band from “Bamboozled” that featured Mos Def. One thing Lee has shied away from in his career is lensing music videos for “booty and bitches” rap videos or aggro ganster rap with anti-conscious messages...

If the tone of Amends was Peace On Earth: Goodwill To All Men With Brooding Scowls and Copious Amounts Of Hair Gel, then Gingerbread's tone is a little less forgiving. It's a curious tale, and one that follows a familiar Buffy The Vampire Slayer pattern of starting out as something unnervingly startling and then turning into something totally different halfway through. The overall picture with Gingerbread is a look at the dangers of mob mentality and bandwagon jumping – it pulls no punches, but at the same time, it's a thoughtful and frequently very funny tale that manages to keep the momentum of the impressive third season.
Gingerbread starts out with the horrific discovery of two dead young kids. It's too bad that Joyce, having chosen to accompany Buffy on patrol, with a packet of food and a flask of drink, has made this awful find. The death of a...

To the casual observer, Elizabeth Jennings is still a paragon of Directorate S: During this week's rather mundane mission, which was to steal propeller schematics from a factory mid-move (thank you, Brush-Pass Fred for the heads up), all she needed was to fondle a crowbar and pocket the photo of a low-level cog's youngest son to ensure his silence. There was no physical harm, there were no threats – yet Keri Russell gave off such a menacing vibe with her understated mannerisms that I wasn't so sure Derek was going to...

Songwriter Kirsty MacColl's "They Don't Know (About Us)" makes a fitting title track for "Our Nixon." The found-footage documentary, woven from 500 hours of Super 8 shot by Watergate convicts H.R. Haldeman, John Ehrlichman, and Dwight Chapin, isn't just a portrait of the Nixon's peculiar boys club. It's a time capsule from a bygone age. And, really, who would have thought the president's chief of staff, domestic affairs advisor, and special assistant spent the early 1970s making home movies along with national policy, carrying cameras as well as clipboards? (Imagine Reggie Love and Rahm Emanuel uploading playful YouTube videos from the campaign trail.) Witnessed from our own era -- an era of armed drones, hacker collectives, and Prism, of staying "on message" and avoiding "gaffes" -- this unorthodox raw material, collected by the FBI in the course of the Watergate investigation, seems almost quaint in its earnestness. "I was just waiting,...

The film Beyond Bollywood is about the lives of four characters who work on the fringes of Bollywood. We followed and filmed these characters over a period of four years. We decided to follow these characters because we felt a certain connect with them and found them to be extremely passionate about what they were doing –
- Pooja, whose idol is Madhuri Dixit, came to Mumbai to become a dancer and through sheer hard work, moved on from being a background dancer to a lead dancer and also got a role in a film as the lead actress. She had to shed her “middle class” inhibitions in order to be able to do what she wanted to.

Six Feet Under ran on HBO from 2001-2005. It was nominated for several Emmys and is always in the conversation when discussing “the greatest television shows”.
What makes Six Feet Under stick out in ways that other shows haven’t before it, or failed to do after it, can not be over looked. Most viewers who have experienced the whole show confess to some deep personal connection. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve read “Six Feet Under changed my life!” And now I’ve tried to put into words why and how Six Feet Under is able to touch so many viewers on a deep level.
Minor spoilers ahead.

Back in December, Cannon told Howard Stern that he and Carey, 40, didn't have sex until they were officially married, candidly revealing on Stern's radio show, "It was Mariah Carey. If Mariah Carey gave a bad blowjob,...

So there’s this little known French duo, a pair of producers, who go by the name of Daft Punk. They did alright for themselves around the turn of the new millennium, but then no one really heard from them for some time. It looks like they’re trying to make something of a comeback this year and have released this album quite quietly on the down-low with no real fanfare for its arrival or anything, but good luck to them I say. A bit of back story on them? Well, okay, it’s all kind of boring really, but…
Yeah, I thought that was a bit unlikely. You know who Daft Punk are, I know who Daft Punk are and since the announcement of this new album, and the expertly delivered promotional campaign along with it, it seems everyone and their everyone knows who Daft Punk are and always have.

The album won't be coming out for around two weeks, but you can now stream the entire album online for free! The whole thing can be found on iTunes. I really love this album. It reminds me of some of their lighter work on Discovery ("Something About Us" and "Verdis Quo") while combining some of the heavier electronic prowess found on Alive 2007. Be warned: those of you who are expecting a full out Tron inspired electronica explosion, you're going to be disappointed -- listening to the band's other work you shouldn't have expected that.
All in all, this album is worth the hype. I truly enjoyed it front to back. If you want one track that sums up the album really well, I suggest listening to "Giorgio By Morodor". It's a fantastic song to set the tone and includes a cameo by none other than Werner Herzog! Check out an...

How Girls Took Over Gossip Girl's Throne, and What That Says About Us Gossip Girl is to 2008 as Girls is to 2012. by Kate Hakala Gossip Girl comes to a halt on December 17th, after six seasons of duplicitous scheming, barely-there couture, and "scandalous" teen sex. But as Gossip Girl's illusions of grandeur (as glimpsed through Blake Lively's legs) fade out, the real-bodied, awkward, emotional car crash that is Lena Dunham's Girls has taken center stage. How did two very different shows command the zeitgeist so thoroughly a scant four years apart? Gossip Girl arrived in late 2007 and hit its stride in 2008, a year marked by the housing crash and the worst economic depression since the Great one. In the midst of this tumult, people wanted fantasy, glamor; the type of apolitical, inconsequential drama that the show promised and delivered. Consequently, it was talked [...]...

We can safely say, without fear of being mistaken, that One Direction is the biggest band around right now. Theirs has been a meteoric, unquestionable rise to the top of pretty much every country in the world in a way that makes the Jonas Brothers’ success from a few years ago seem amateurish. One Direction were the first British band to go straight to number 1 in the Us with their debut album this year, a feat not even The Beatles managed at their time.
The comparison with The Beatles is not coincidental: the mayhem that follows One Direction everywhere they go is only an updated, Twitter-crazy version of what The Fab Four from Liverpool experienced all those years ago. Justin Bieber’s induced hysteria from a couple of years ago is the only recent event that could possibly compare to it, and still it doesn’t...

One Direction's popularity is a blessing, but it may also be a curse. Their album 'Take Me Home' was leaked before its indended release date on Nov. 13! Considering One Direction's rabid fans, it's no surprise that their brand-new album Take Me Home was leaked online before its release. Samples of the songs from the entire album have been leaked almost two weeks before their intended debut! The leaked tracks include “Kiss You,” “C’mon,C’mon,” “Last First Kiss,” “Heart Attack,” “Rock Me,” “Back For You,” “Change My Mind,” “I Would,” “Over Again,” and “They Don’t Know About Us.” Furthermore, samples of additional tracks from the deluxe version, Take Me Home: Yearbook Edition, also leaked. (It's like Christmas came early!) One fan tweeted, "Listening to the leak snip bits of 'Take Me Home'. I Need The Album Now.

Hulk Hogan's long-rumored sex tape has surfaced online in the form of a preview posted by Gawker after it was given a copy by an anonymous source. According to the site, the minute-and-a-half clip—which contained snippets that were edited together from a 30-minute recording—shows the WWE legend, real name Terry Bollea, about to do the deed with an brunette whose identity cannot be confirmed. But before the duo hits the mat, the ex-grappler's cell phone goes off (the ringtone is daughter Brooke Hogan's song "About Us"). Hogan checks it to make sure it's not his son, Nick, who's calling, which means the tape was probably recorded some time after the younger Hogan got out...

Ready for a fight? Michael Jackson would've been 54 years old today, so instead of dwelling on bizarro distractions like Conrad Murray, Debbie Rowe, or the legendary La Toya, let's brawl about the one thing that will always matter about the King of Pop: the music. Time to rank his 54 best tunes, and that includes his Jackson 5/Jacksons stuff. It doesn't include his cameo vocal in Rockwell's "Somebody's Watching Me," however.
Can I just say how difficult it is to pick Michael Jackson's 54 best songs? I could've focused more on his Jackson 5-era stuff, but I think it's only right to give Thriller and Off the Wall most of the attention. Without further ado, here are my picks for Michael Jackson's 54 greatest songs. Your job? School me with dissent.
54. "You Are Not Alone"
53. "Will You Be There"
52. "Speed Demon"
51. "Ben"
50. "Dangerous"
49. "Why You Wanna Trip On Me...

Along with premiering his out-of-competition Michael Jackson documentary "Bad 25" at the Venice Film Festival (August 29 - September 8), Spike Lee will also be honored by the fest with the Jaeger-LeCoultre Glory to the Filmmaker Award. The award, which has previously gone to artists as disparate as Takeshi Kitano, Abbas Kiarostami and Sylvester Stallone, recognizes a filmmaker or actor's unique contribution to and signature on contemporary film. Venice artistic director Alberto Barbera describes Lee's films as "audacious and scathing... unpredictable and provocative in the best sense of the word." "Bad at 25" focuses on the 25th anniversary of Jackson's "Bad" album, and screens on August 31. Lee has a history of having worked with Jackson, as he directed two videoclips for the musician's songs ("They Don't Care About Us" in 1997, and "This Is It" in 2009). Check out a snippet of the new doc...

Get ready, Mariah Carey fans, because new music is on the way!
Carey took to Twitter on Saturday to announce the title of her new single, "Triumphant (Get 'Em)," and shared a little bit about the song's significance with her followers:
According to Celebuzz, the new tune was written and produced by Carey, as well as Jermaine Dupri and Brian Michael Cox, who also worked on the singer's hits “Shake It Off” and “Don’t Forget About Us.”
But Carey's single announcement isn't the only news to be shared about her recently. Though she's certainly no stranger to rumors, the latest item making the rounds suggests the singer is headed to primetime.
According to Deadline, Carey is getting close to inking a deal to join "American Idol" next season. Should she land a spot at the coveted judges' table next to Randy Jackson -- both Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler...

Acclaimed film-maker is finishing documentary about Jackson's Bad album, for its 25th anniversary
Spike Lee is in the final stages of post-production on a documentary about Michael Jackson's 1987 album Bad. The director has uncovered a "treasure chest" of footage, he said, including home movies and behind-the-scenes clips. Lee has also conducted about 40 interviews with the likes of Kanye West and Mariah Carey, as well as many of Jackson's studio collaborators. Lee has had the full co-operation of Jackson's estate in making the movie.
The as yet unnamed film is due later this year, to co-ordinate with Bad's 25th anniversary reissue in September. And just as the remastered album will include an expanded track-list, Lee's documentary will incorporate lots of unreleased songs. "[Michael] wrote 60 demos for the Bad record," he said. "Only 11 made it. So we got to hear a lot of that stuff, too."

Swizz Beatz is not the CEO of Megaupload, the file-sharing website that was shut down by the federal government on January 19, as was previously reported. A source very familiar with Swizz's situation cleared the air for MTV News late Saturday night, but contends that the multi-platinum producer is still seriously involved with the company, though he wasn't named in the federal indictment against Megaupload and is no way connected to the crimes of which they are being accused. "He's not walking away from this," the source told MTV News.
Before Megaupload was shut down, Swizz Beatz (nee Kasseem Dean) was listed on the company's "About Us" page as the CEO. The source, who asked to remain anonymous, confirmed that while Beatz, husband to R&B star Alicia Keys,...

Swizz Beatz has a number of different hustles: record producer, rapper and shoe designer. It turns out the Bronx-born hitmaker is also the CEO of the file-sharing site Megaupload, which at the moment has drawn a bit of fire from Universal Music Group, the record company where Swizz was once signed.
In an effort to raise the company's profile, Megaupload has been releasing video testimonials from big-name artists like Kanye West, Diddy, will.i.am and Swizz's wife, Alicia Keys, along with celebrities like Kim Kardashian. In the promotional videos, the big-name stars express their support of the site, which allows users to send large media files — sometimes pirated materials such as entire movies and albums.

We’ve got questions, and you’ve (maybe) got answers! With another week of TV gone by, here are some queries we are going to throw at you, from shows such as Chuck, Homeland, American Horror Story, The X Factor and more!
1 | How did Chuck‘s Ellie and Awesome escape the moving limo last week when it had been purposely established that the driver locked the doors? That nitpick aside, who else would totally tune in for a spinoff called The Awesomes?
2 | Why did Saturday Night Live host Jimmy Fallon conspicuously fail to pretend-play the keyboard at all, as is tradition,...
