This year has been a fairly week year for Crime Thrillers. There aren't any memorable ones coming from the States. Instead, the only memorable Crime Thriller came from South Korea in the form of The Chaser, which is one of the best films released this year. Thankfully, I can add another to this non-existent list.
MR 73 is a bleak and beautiful film, with fantastic acting from all sides, exquisite music, and magnificent cinematography. A film about filthy, dirty cops, diabolical serial killers, and anti-heroes. Yikes! Not recommended for any sort of date or Catholic movie party.
I'm not that familiar with French Cinema, especially modern French Cinema. So you can imagine how intrigued I was with Daniel Auteuil, who I haven't seen before in any film prior to this one. His performance will leave you having a heart attack. It is a mesmerizing, grandiose, towering, incredibly brave and audacious performance that won't leave my mind any time soon. And that's not even the good part. The majority of the characters in this film seem to suffer from not being one-dimensional. The dirty cops have depth to them, and even the serial killer makes us lose our guard time to time. It is all about expressions and the detail in the eyes these actors and actresses bring. Its as if Olivier Marchal is the greatest director who nobody outside of France knows of. What a shame.
Even with all the praise in the last paragraph, some things in the script stopped me from giving this marvelous film a 9. As with most Crime Thrillers (especially bleak ones), inyourface clichés are inevitable. Same case here. I understand the honesty and heart the filmmakers wanted to bring to the table, but being the critical film buff that I am, I couldn't fail to ignore these tidbits.
Nevertheless, the film is a must see and one of the best of the year. However, be warned, learn about the film before you decide to see it. Even with the optimistic ending as another commenter noted, this film ain't no happy tale.
