A fantastic story of friendship, a unique way of life, with an amazing backdrop. Nakkala is one of those films that not enough people will have the pleasure to see.

Now, I may be a little bias when talking about this film due to a few reasons. I had the pleasure of traveling to Lapland in the north of Finland, I visited the town of Nakkala and I also met many of the people in which the film is based around, but I believe that anyone who is to view this film could not believe just what these people do from day to day. They put up with some of the most ridiculous weather conditions on earth during winter and mosquitoes that limit the distance of vision in summer. Nakkala is a true story about a Swiss gentleman (Schwaar)who read about Lapland in a book and became intrigued in their way of life. He visited the area and after meeting Iisakki-Matias Syvajarvi, (Iiskko to his friends,) a local from the township of Nakkala and a friendship was formed. The friendship was instant, based around Schwaar wanting knowledge of everything Sami and Iiskko being that wealth of knowledge. The tale covers many areas of Sami life, but revolves mostly around the way of life the Lapps lead and led and how nature basically dictates the terms of everything. There are fantastic insights into reindeer herding, the Sami's love of cigarettes and beer and incredibly dry wit. Probably the most fascinating insight is how the Sami are so keen to pass on knowledge and history of the way of life they lead. Peter Ramseier has attempted to show just what an amazing place Lapland is, but whether that is truly possible through a camera lens and 88 minutes, I don't think so. Unlike myself, who was lucky enough to visit this place, if you can not make it yourself, this film will show you many attributes of this amazing area, and probably make you want to go! In Lapland everyday is an adventure.
