Trekkies, The King of Kong and Trekkies II are some of my favorite documentaries. I must have seen them around 20 times each. I'll even put them on in the background while I'm working. It's not the subject matter that fascinates me, it's the people in the documentary. I am fascinated by geek culture. I could watch a documentary like Trekkies and King of Kong for hours on end. Obsessed fans of whatever thing they're into, for some reason, grab my attention. Most of these people are the most socially awkward, nerdiest dorks you could find and for some reason I want to watch them go about their daily lives. I don't know if it's pity or jealousy that draws me to these documentaries. I guess it's a little bit of both. I pity them because most have issues that they're trying to work out through their fantasy lives. Some just...

The Vicious Kind
I prefer to mainline my indie films in sets of two or three just because I hope that even if one's gonna be painful I can wash away the taint with something somewhat decent. One night, I had planned a three-for, and I was kneecapped by Yesterday Was a Lie. An award-winning neo-noir that was so painfully excruciating to watch I literally could not stomach another movie. I went home, put a wet towel over my forehead, lamented my choice to become a film student, and refused to turn on anything electric for 50 hours. I never reviewed that film, and subsequently missed out on catching what was to be the follow up, Lee Toland Krieger's The Vicious Kind. Monster Camp is a new documentary directed by Cullen Hoback. The documentary is about Larping. Which is simple terms is Live action Role Playing where you dress up as a dwarf or an elf and get together with 60 of your buddies and whack each other with nerf weapons while roleplaying with rules. It sounds really idiotic to many I am sure and I was one of those who thought it sounded pretty idiotic and still think the whole idea of Live Role Playing with nerf weapons is lame. That said the documentary is entertaining, funny and interesting. It just goes to show that good documentaries on whacky t...
