An enjoyable anime with a dramatic mood change half way through
Tweekums4 May 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Set twelve years after a world changing event known as the 'Blast Fall' this series follows bounty hunter Roy Revant whose wife was killed and daughter vanished in the Blast Fall. His life is changed when a green haired girl literally falls out of the sky and saves his life. She starts to follow him despite his protestations and eventually he adopts her and gives her the name Solty. It soon becomes apparent that she isn't like other girls; she is incredibly strong as she is a robot although she doesn't know this as she has lost all memories of her life before she met Roy. As the series progresses they have run-ins with thief Rose Anderson and her brothers and the RUC (the world government/police). Early episodes are fairly light-hearted but things get much darker half way through when some major characters are killed leaving Roy despondent and Solty walking off into the desert. In the remaining episodes they must come back together and in what will turn into a literal struggle to save humanity!

I picked up this series because it was cheap and ended up really enjoying it despite being unsure about Solty's character design; her hair is strange even by anime standards! The characters are interesting as is their situation. Early on there are some laughs which serves to make the tragic events hit harder. There are a few good twists which do actually come as a surprise rather than being expected. It does contain some material that might not be suitable for younger viewers; there is some blood spilt and a fair amount of fan service… mostly in the form of close ups of Solty's backside which is clothed in trousers that are very tight but also includes more than one shower scene. Over all I'd say this series is well worth watching; especially if being sold at a lower than usual price.

The series is twenty six episodes long but the final two are OVA episodes that take place between episodes nine and ten and I would recommend watching them there; I watched them after episode twenty four, which is the real finale, and was surprised to see characters who I thought were dead! These comments are based on watching the series in Japanese with English subtitles.

Uneven but above average story about two lost souls who become a family

Warning: Spoilers
This show, airing around 2005, got me back into anime after a long time. For the most part it's a fairly predictable anime, but there are parts of it that make it stand out.

The story is fairly average but adequate, being mostly a homage to THE MATRIX: rebels fighting an oppressive authority (two characters are even named Larry and Andy) within a confined system, a villain whose ulterior motive is to break free of that system, and a heroine who develops her own identity and ultimately becomes a hero to save her family. The story also has an uneven pace at times, sliding between an epic battle for the fate of a world and an intimate look at the protagonists' day-to-day experiences. Still, for the most part it tells its story competently enough.

But the real heart of the tale is the bond between the bounty hunter Roy and the amnesiac Solty, and for me is the most satisfying part. All the other plot angles form a backdrop to this angle, about two lost souls who become a family. Gruff loner Roy Revant is a widower, while Solty is a lost waif who doesn't even have a memory. The way the two grow closer together across the series – defending each other, helping and relying on each other, and even hurting each other but making amends later (this one is fairly one-sided, on Roy's part naturally) – is maturely and carefully handled, and comes to a heartwarming payoff.

The English voice cast is very well done, in my opinion Christopher Sabat (Roy) and Carrie Savage (Solty) did some of their best performances in this anime. And the artwork, while the blend of hand-drawn and computer-generated animation is a little awkward, wonderfully shows off the steampunk setting. The soundtrack is atmospheric and jazzy, with some great tracks that fit the mood of whichever scene it's being used for (the closing track "Float Beyond the Sky" is a favourite of mine).

On the whole, it's a nice story, with a touching family angle. It's definitely worth a watch.

At first sight didn't look much, now one of my faves!

The cover of solty rei isn't extremely attracting. Not ugly, but not really all that. So there's this girl with a weird green hairstyle and this old dude who looks pretty grumpy. But, anime is anime so I rented it. Solty is an android who has lost all memory of her past and has more powers than she knows. Roy is a bounty hunter(you like barely see him smile except in flashbacks and stuff.) Roy has a daughter, who was lost in the blast fall, an explosion which separated many families. Roy finds his daughter's shoe, but nothing else. Determined to find his daughter, he decides that she isn't dead and keeps up a search. Suddenly, Solty and Roy collide. After saving his life, Roy takes care of solty, and names her(solty, if you haven't noticed yet.) The story continues this way, and soon the plot thickens. Mecha fans would be disappointed to know, though that this anime isn't all the machinery in most futuristic animes. People like me will be relieved. :) All over all, a swell anime that's for everyone. Not so sci-fi that you can't follow the story, but enough to give you that futuristic feeling.
