No. Hunger based on the true story of the hunger strike taken on by Irish Republic Army (IRA) protester, Bobby Sands. The screenplay was written by English artist Steven McQueen and Irish playwright Edna Walsh.
Bobby Sands' actions followed a long-standing dispute between Unionist Protestants and Nationalist Catholics in Northern Ireland. Unionists wished to preserve the link between Ireland and England, whereas the Nationalists, typified by IRA protesters like Bobby Sands, wanted Irish independence. In 1981, Sands took on a hunger strike (and eventually died at the age of 27) in order to protest the treatment of Nationalist captives by the Unionist Army. Sands died after a 66 day hunger strike.
