I live a life full of love, passion, death, loss, joy, tragedy and anger. I am an opera singer.
A career in opera isn’t something people decide on. You feel it, experience it and fall in love with it. This happened to me at the age of 13 while on stage with The Canadian Opera Company in their production of Boris Godunov. I was completely entranced by the passion and enormous sound from the singers and the beauty of the music. I remember going home and telling my mother that my whole life had changed that evening. There is no question that this experience had a profound impact on me and was the beginning of my career.

You might not know Norwegian filmmaker Tommy Wirkola's name by heart, but you've probably heard of some of the film’s he’s been a part of, such as the fun and gory Dead Snow films about Nazi zombies, as well as the way better than it had any right to be Hansel And Gretel: Witch Hunters starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton. Tommy Wirkola, the man who brought us such genre gems as Dead Snow and Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, is back with a brand new Netflix sci-fi thriller called What Happened to Monday, starring Noomi Rapace. Editor’s Note: This article is presented in partnership with Netflix’s original film “What Happened to Monday?” – now streaming on Netflix.
Although he’s best known to American audiences for his funny and gruesome spins on old-fashioned fairy tales that follow characters as wide-ranging as zombie Nazis (“Dead Snow”) and candy-seeking children (“Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters”), Norwegian director Tommy Wirkola has some other tricks up his sleeve. With his “What Happened to Monday?,” Wirkola tackles high-concept sci-fi, thanks to an ambitious story that follows seven identical sisters (all played by Noomi Rapace) trapped in a future society that only allows just one child per household.
In the film, each sister is assigned a day of the week – and a matching name – in which they’re allowed out of their apartment (and the watchful eye of their surrogate dad, played by Willem Dafoe) for a little slice of living.

When Max Botkin’s high-concept sci-fi thriller “What Happened to Monday?” landed on the Blacklist of “most liked” unproduced screenplays in 2010, the film followed seven brothers living in a dystopian future world where families are only allowed a single child. Seven years later, Tommy Wirkola’s version of the film is complete, with one major twist: now it’s about sisters.
Although the film went through a number of rewrites during its journey from page to screen, it was Wirkola who hit upon the idea to change the gender of the septuplets, all the better to add a different dimension to an already clever concept. But his idea came with a caveat, as he could only imagine one star in the role (well, the seven roles): Swedish star Noomi Rapace, whom he had once considered casting in his “Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters.”

There are multiple Noomi Rapaces in the forthcoming sci-fi thriller, What Happened To Monday. Here's the new trailer...
If the sci-fi thriller What Happened To Monday had come out in the 80s, its trailer would have written itself. "In a world... where having more than one child is banned... one couple dared to have septuplets..." (You have to imagine all that read out in the gruff voice of 80s Trailer Voiceover Guy, Don Lafontaine).

Tommy Wirkola, who brought us Nazi zombies and turned Hansel and Gretel into witch hunters, casts his speculative gaze toward near-future dystopia in What Happened to Monday, a thriller that pits a septet of illegal siblings against an authoritarian regime. The intriguingly bonkers premise rests somewhat soundly on matters of climate change, overpopulation and genetic engineering, but its most burning question is “Are seven Noomi Rapaces better than one?” To which the answer is a resounding “Sure, why not?”

There have been many, many movies about World War II, and of course most of them are like Saving Private Ryan, or last year’s Hacksaw Ridge as they focus on the brave heroes who went off to war and found a way not only to survive, but also come home as heroes.
Their Finest, based on Lissa Evans’ 2009 book Their Finest Hour and a Half, instead focuses on the brave women back home who did their part to try to keep spirits up and continue to support the British troops overseas.
In the movie, Gemma Arterton plays Catrin Cole, an ad writer hired to write the female dialogue (or “slop”) for the British Ministry of Information’s propaganda films they release to inspire the people back in England. Daisy-May Hudson’s documentary about her family’s journey into the depersonalising trauma of the rehousing system has the quiet desperation of I, Daniel Blake
In a crushingly personal dispatch from a family pushed off the edge of London’s housing boom, Daisy-May Hudson hits record on her camcorder as she, her mother Beverly and 13-year-old sister Bronte are evicted from their Epping home and forced into the purgatory of the hostels system. The younger sibling, afraid to stay there alone at night, dubs the pebbledashed lodging they are allocated “Hansel and Gretel’s thing in the woods”. They face an all-too-familiar austerity-Britain obstacle course: freefalling living standards, bureaucratic vindictiveness and stonewalling – plus paying a pretty penny (£500 a week) for the privilege.

“Hansel and Gretel” tries a different approach to the supernatural horror genre, by transforming a classic fairy tale.
Eun-soo, a young man with some family troubles, has a car accident that leaves him injured into the woods. As he tries to get back to the road, he meets a girl with a lantern, who eventually invites him into her home. In there, he meets her two siblings, older Man-bok and little Jeong-sun, along with their parents, Yeong-sik and Su-jeong. Initially, they seem like a happy family, but as time passes, there are indications for the opposite. Eun-soo eventually realizes that he cannot get away from that forest, and that something very strange is happening in this house. Things become even more complicated when Deacon Byeon and his partner Hye-young appear in the woods, as Eun-soo discovers the children’s true story.

The killer caravanner from Sightseers is now playing a homicidal mother-to-be in Prevenge, her directorial debut. She talks about creating an anti-superheroine and her fear of being pigeonholed
In school plays, Alice Lowe always took the part the other children didn’t want. In Hansel and Gretel, she remembers little girls crying because they didn’t want to be the witch, a part that Lowe seemed to have taken on with a mixture of resignation and warped delight. Looking back, she says with a laugh, “I often think this is quite significant.” She never played Mary, for instance, in the nativity. Or Juliet. “I never got that gig. I would always be the weird character that nobody else wanted to play. I’m still the person who doesn’t mind being the ugly evil weirdo who murders people.”
