The big score
TBJCSKCNRRQTreviews17 February 2008
This is a special feature found on the 2-Disc Special Edition DVD of Batman Returns, released in 2005, and it deals exclusively with the score of the film. Of all of the specials on the DVD, this is perhaps the most unique. There are only two people interviewed, and Elfman supremely ranks as the most heavily featured of them. There is some sparse(but definitely good) footage of him working on the music, and film clips are inter-cut here and there, to, for example, help show what Elfman means and/or is talking about. Talked about is how operatic it is, how intense and how much hard work there is in it for Elfman, and last but definitely not least(in fact, it's quite probably the high point of the great special), Elfman talks about what specifically he did for each of the three main themes(one per character). It is well-paced and informational. It comes in just under eleven and a half minutes in total, and is interesting and worth it throughout. Anyone interested in music and/or score(who doesn't *hate* this movie), perhaps the latter of the two, more so, really ought to give this a chance(if it, as with many DVD extras, is best done after watching the film, if the viewer has any intention of doing so... there are spoilers herein). I recommend this to anyone who finds themselves in aforementioned group... and anyone who likes the movie and/or the score of it. 7/10
