When Warner Bros. and Legendary released Godzilla vs. Kong in 2021, the folks at The Asylum quickly put together a mockbuster called Ape vs. Monster, which featured a giant chimpanzee battling a giant Gila monster (after both creatures were enlarged by consuming a mysterious substance leaking from a space capsule). A sequel called Ape vs. Mecha Ape followed in 2023. Now the Godzilla vs. Kong sequel Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is in theatres, and The Asylum will be giving their mockbuster Ape x Mecha Ape: New World Order a digital and theatrical release this Friday, April 5th. In anticipation of the release, a trailer has arrived online, and you can check it out in the embed above.
Ape x Mecha Ape: New World Order has been written and directed by Marc Gottlieb, who previously directed Ape vs. Mecha Ape and the 1995 comedy Cousin Howard. Gottlieb’s other writing credits include Planet of the Sharks,...

The franchise may have earned almost $1.5 billion at the box office after just three installments, but Godzilla vs. Kong is shaping up to be the movie that could make or break the entire MonsterVerse, which adds even more pressure onto a mega-budget blockbuster that’s already undergone extensive reshoots and suffered several delays.
Most of the information we’ve gotten regarding the epic monster mash seems to have come from the tie-in merchandise, with the creative team still keeping their cards close to the chest when it comes to revealing plot details. Star Eiza Gonzalez hinted that Godzilla vs. Kong will tell a more relatable human story this time around, and while it would be a marked improvement for the MonsterVerse to feature some interesting characters for a change, most people will be buying a ticket based entirely on watching two of cinema’s most iconic monsters battling for supremacy.

I’ve recently spent some time in the Syracuse University Archives researching old comic strips. It turns out they have an incredible collection of original artwork by top tier comic artists – everyone from Hal Foster to Frank Robbins. It’s quite a thrill and every time I view these originals I feel like a kid who’s successfully raided the cookie jar – and got away with it.
That’s how the new Monster Island book made me feel. You might remember Graham Nolan’s independent comic from about 20 years ago. It was a kick to follow along as two military folks fight their way across an island full of monsters. And it’s not Frankenstein or the Wolfman – these are monsters in the classic Kirby-Atlas Comics or Godzilla-toho studios mold. Big and scary and nutty and goofy and fun. My kinda monsters.

Syfy and mockbuster producers The Asylum are back with yet another blockbuster movie cash-in with Monster Island, their take on Godzilla: King of the Monsters… only Without Godzilla to save the day! The plots are virtually identical: in this case a deep-sea drilling expedition gone wrong uncovers a monstrous giant starfish that wrecks havoc on humanity, an awakening that is followed by even more kaiju arising and terrorising Earth – forcing a team of scientists to find the legendary creature, the Living Mountain, and get it to battle the menace.
Oh and did I mention that not only is there a giant starfish but he spews lava/magma and is probably responsible for all the worlds volcanic disasters? And we also get fire-breathing monsters,...
