We can't say that we live in a boring world today. And when we say boring, what we really mean is the one where nothing happens. Every day we hear about different incidents, both man-made and natural, that make us wonder what the future will bring. But we still secretly wish we would never find out.
However, when a show or movie gives us the chance to see what the world would be like if something extraordinary happened, we never miss the opportunity to take it in. That's why the dystopian genre is so popular – because it gives answers to questions that no one is allowed to ask out loud.
And here we have the list of the 5 best dystopian dramas as voted by Redditors.
1. Cloud Atlas (2012)
Cloud Atlas is a movie that makes your brain work like crazy and frankly it seems like that’s something not every viewer is ready to experience.

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we revisit the limited races, now with “Baby Reindeer” in the mix.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’re back to type about the limited series race, which remains fairly top-heavy despite what the odds might suggest. To wit: Netflix smash “Baby Reindeer” is only in fifth place in our odds, even though it’s all-but-assured of being extremely win-competitive in this race and could usurp “Shōgun” in the end as the year’s one true sensation of the year (if the latter doesn’t move to drama as widely speculated this week). You were the earliest adopter of the Netflix juggernaut, which made landfall in Los Angeles this week for a splashy FYC event. The show feels assured of several top nominations,...

In what could have easily been the next season of “American Crime Story,” Lionsgate Television is diving into the gambling scandal that’s rocked Major League Baseball since March.
Lionsgate is developing a scripted series about how Shohei Ohtani, the Japanese superstar of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Angels, became the subject of massive fraud and theft at the hands of his longtime interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara. Just days ago, Mizuhara agreed to plead guilty to accusations he stole almost $17 million from Ohtani to pay off gambling debts.
Scott Delman (“Station Eleven”) will produce along with Albert Chen, a former senior editor with Sports Illustrated, MLB Network contributor, and the writer of “Billion Dollar Fantasy” about the battle between gambling apps DraftKings and FanDuel. No platform or creative talent is being announced at this stage. Executive Max Elins is overseeing the project for Lionsgate Television.

The gambling scandal surrounding LA Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani’s interpreter is already getting the TV series treatment.
Lionsgate Television is in early development on a series focused on the scandal. No writer or network is currently attached to the project, but Scott Delman and Albert Chen are both attached to produce. Executive Max Elins is overseeing the project for Lionsgate Television, while Bryan Weiser negotiated the deal.
Ohtani made headlines the world over when he signed a 10-year, $700 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The star pitcher and designated hitter had for years been working with interpreter Ippei Mizuhara, but just one day into the 2024 MLB season, it was revealed that Mizuhara had stolen nearly $17 million from Ohtani to cover gambling debts. He was immediately fired and later turned himself in to federal authorities. It was just reported that he has plead guilty to bank and tax fraud charges.

Apollo Global Management, a major private-equity firm, has submitted an $11 billion bid to acquire Paramount Pictures and the Paramount TV studios group, according to a published report.
The Wall Street Journal, citing anonymous sources, reported that Apollo Global offered $11 billion for Paramount Global’s film and TV studio business. That would apparently not include CBS, Paramount Global’s cable networks like BET, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon and MTV, or the streaming business unit that includes Paramount+ and Pluto TV.
Apollo’s reported offer for Paramount’s studio operations is greater than the market capitalization of Paramount Global in its entirety ($7.3 billion as of March 19). The proposed transaction may include some assumption of Paramount Global’s long-term debt (which stood at $14.6 billion at the end of 2023).
Shares of Paramount Global closed up 11.8% Wednesday on the Journal report, to $12.51/per share, boosting its market cap to nearly $8.7 billion. The stock remains well below its 52-week high of $24/share.

Thirteen-time Tony Award winner Delman will executive produce the project. Delman served as executive producer on HBO Max’s Emmy-nominated post-apocalyptic limited series Station Eleven. He has also earned six Olivier Awards and served as a producer on several major Broadway hits, including The Book of Mormon, Death of a Salesman, All The Way, Raisin in the Sun,...

Lockhart’s YA novel We Were Liars, which hails from Julie Plec, Carina Adly MacKenzie, Universal Television and Amazon MGM Studios.

We Were Liars is a tragic love story and an amnesia thriller set on a privately owned island off the coast of Massachusetts. It centers on the wealthy, seemingly perfect Sinclair family, who spend every summer on their private island. Gummer, FitzGerald and King play the three Sinclair sisters.

This article contains spoilers for The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live episode 1 and The Last of Us episode 3.
There’s no dating in the apocalypse … at least not for the first few years. It’s all raw survival, never-ending panic, and flashes of joy and ingenuity that keep humanity going just enough to persevere. At least that’s what all the end-of-the-world tales tell us.
In recent years, stories like Station Eleven and The Last of Us have depicted various permutations of disrepair that society might fall into after a deadly global pandemic. When a large portion of the population is just gone and every day is a fight to stay alive, standards and realities change. Instead of meeting by the bar, two lovers might meet staging a coup against a rogue government agency, falling into a booby trap, or perhaps even during a delivery of infant formula to a prison gate.

Lionsgate has acquired domestic rights to the Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Lily James and Himesh Patel comedy “Greedy People.”
The film explores what happens when the eccentric residents of a small, picturesque island town are faced with a sensational murder and the discovery of $1 million next to the body. This sparks a series of increasingly bad decisions that do a number on the peace and tranquility of the community.
“’Greedy People’ is a hugely entertaining crime thriller in every way,” said Allison Lynch, Lionsgate’s director of acquisitions and co-productions. “Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Lily James, and Himesh Patel lead an incredible cast through twists and turns that range from the hilarious to the horrific – and the movie always keeps you guessing.”
The film’s starry ensemble also features Uzo Aduba (“Orange is the New Black”), Tim Blake Nelson (“The Ballad of Buster Scruggs”), Jim Gaffigan (“Chappaquiddick”) and Simon Rex (“Red Rocket”).

Blumhouse has set Black Adam filmmaker Jaume Collet-Serra as director, and Danielle Deadwyler as star and EP on The Woman in the Yard.
The project reteams Collet-Serra and Deadwyler, who recently collaborated on the Netflix thriller pic, Carry On.
The pic, which has a plot line under wraps, is set for theatrical release on Jan. 10, 2025.
“I’ve been trying to find the right project to work on with Jaume, in our system, for over a decade. The Woman in the Yard is the perfect match, a film that’s ambitious in scope but modest in budget that combines Jaume’s vision with the incomparable Danielle Deadwyler. Together with my friend Stephanie Allain, this is a real dream team and I’m excited to collaborate with them on the film,” said Blumhouse Boss Jason Blum.
The Woman in the Yard is written by Sam Stefanak. Blum and Stephanie Allain are producers on the film.

Following a turbulent year marked by dueling industry strikes and the violent contraction–if not yet full pop–of the streaming bubble, 2024 has thus far been pretty good to Hollywood. It certainly helps that we’re in the middle of awards season, which for cineastes amounts to a three-month holiday largely characterized by voluminous binge-watching. And not just binge-watching of the year’s top films. For the curious, the season also offers up a smuggler’s bounty full of talking special post-screening Q&As, roundtables, filmmaker panels, celebratory cocktail receptions and more.
Traditionally Film Independent’s Directors Close-Up series has been a little bit of all of the above, presenting behind-the-scenes insight into the year’s most important works of cinema, straight from the mouths and brains of filmmakers themselves. Christopher Nolan has built his name up over the years to the point that he’s widley considered the greatest director or our generation. His latest film, Oppenheimer, seems bound to finally win him an elusive best director Oscar. But, in the wild build up to his latest movie, many failed to consider his last movie, Tenet, which was unusually divisive for the director. With it set for a nationwide re-release next month, now’s a good time to look back on a movie that’s winning more and more fans every year.
Tenet was born from a simple idea that came to him while making his breakout hit Memento over 20 years ago. While putting that film together, he thought of a single image that helped him crack the way in which to tell a backwards story. The image was that of a bullet being sucked out of a wall.

This article contains some Good Grief spoilers.
For the entirety of Good Grief, I couldn’t look away from Dan Levy’s sweater: that excellent cable-knit style popularized in recent films like Knives Out, yet here in a lovely dove gray unlike the usual preppy cream. It was also radically different from the black-and-white jumpers he modeled as David Rose in the dramedy Schitt’s Creek, establishing that queer character’s distinctive fashion sense in a uniform that would recur even with his emotional development. Yet it feels like a costuming through-line to Levy’s next memorable character, widower Marcus, in his feature debut as a writer-director.
Here the sweater signifies the very human desperation to hold on to something of the past, even when it brings us pain. As Marc learns through his own figurative unraveling after a year of grief, a memento like that doesn’t have to be...

We’re happy to report that after five days, all of our New Years Resolutions are still intact. Except for the one about doing 20 minutes of yoga in the morning. Impossible. And the one about not eating the entire bag of potato chips in one sitting. Yeah, nah. Oh! We also didn’t stop doomscrolling, smoking or clipping our toenails at the gym. But other than that? Perfectly on track. And while there are still two long months of awards season left to endure enjoy, the New Year has brought a bountiful crop of Don’t-Miss Indies.

In American Fiction, writer-director Cord Jefferson’s (Station Eleven, Succession, Watchmen) adaptation of Percival Everett’s 2001 novel, Erasure, a brilliant, blistering satire of commercial publishing, mainstream media, and Hollywood studio system, Thelonious “Monk” Ellison (Jeffrey Wright), a literature professor and under-read novelist, finds himself face-to-face with a seemingly intractable personal and professional dilemma. Out of frustration, anger, and contempt, Monk writes a parodic novel, My Pafology, under a pseudonym, Stagger E. Leigh (a variation on the popular early 20th-century folk song). Monk centers his new novel on a regressive, stereotypical version of the “Black experience”. Ultimately, circumstances dictate a binary choice between financial necessity and artistic integrity. A seismic change family-wise, however, compels Monk into a stark, unavoidable choice between the two singularly opposed alternatives....

“He’s changing the narrative.” The new comedy, “American Fiction,” features a wickedly sharp and bitingly funny premise. The feature-length directorial debut of Cord Jefferson, a producer and writer on acclaimed series such as “Watchmen,” “Station Eleven” and “Master Of None,” the film is adapted from Percival Everett’s “Erasure,” a brilliant indictment of the way modern culture handles race, a pointed satire about the commodification of marginalized voices and a writer forced to confront himself and his own creative integrity.

Cord Jefferson would love to stay and chat with his icons, but he’s in the midst of a long awards season and has to “talk to some strangers” about his debut feature “American Fiction.”
So upon accepting the Breakthrough Award at the IndieWire Honors ceremony on December 6 at NeueHouse Hollywood, he said he’s ducking out early not because he’s a “snob,” but because he cares deeply about his work and he wants to make sure he can keep meeting people he admires.
“I’m an artist, so I’m sensitive about my shit. That is 100 percent true. I am deeply insecure,” Jefferson said, quoting the singer Erykah Badu. “I’ve never directed anything before I made this movie, I’ve never written a movie before I made this movie. "The Amityville Horror" is one of the definitive haunted house films, a classic tale about paranormal activity terrorizing a suburban family with swarming flies, mysterious voices, and sudden illness. Even the windows resemble ominous eyes peering down on the unsuspecting victims. The movie taps into the religious undertones popularized by other 1970s releases such as "The Exorcist" and "The Omen," suggesting there is a Satanic force at work that must be destroyed.
Eventually, the new owners George and Kathy Lutz discover the horrifying history of their new home: Ronald DeFeo Jr. murdered his entire family with a rifle one year prior, a Satanic worshipper named John Ketchum once lived on the land, and the house itself was built on a Shinnecock burial ground.
Despite receiving mixed reviews for elements like the cheesy portrayal of a possessed George, "The Amityville Horror" ended up having a significant impact on the horror genre.

Former Jigsaw exec Marra will lead the company’s non-fiction division, with former manager Matteson set to oversee scripted television.
The hires come following Closer Media’s successful run on the fall festival circuit with titles including its first narrative feature, Ezra, The Monk and the Gun, which was snapped up for North America by Roadside Attractions after bowing out of Toronto, and the documentary In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon.

Since joining Closer, Marra has spearheaded development of the Elon Musk documentary Musk, from Academy Award-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney, which was recently acquired by HBO. He produced...

Updated: With the fall festivals behind us — we’re talking the triple whammy of Venice, Telluride, and Toronto, plus the just-wrapped New York Film Festival and BFI London — we’re taking stock of the best films of the circuit. While it’s always easy to use the fall festivals as a window into this year’s awards contenders, of which many debuted over the past few weeks, the festivals have also provided us with some of the best films of 2023, full stop.
These standouts include new films from perennial favorites like Hayao Miyazaki, Errol Morris, Bertrand Bonello, Yorgos Lanthimos, Kitty Green, Andrew Haigh, Bill and Turner Ross, and Alexander Payne. Rising stars aren’t in short supply either, including first and second narrative features from TIFF winner Cord Jefferson, Annie Baker, and Kristoffer Borgli. Amongst this selection, words like “gem,” “masterpiece,” and “crowd-pleaser” are thrown around with regularity, but not without real consideration.

An orphaned Irish teenager spars with her scheming uncle in this insightful reworking of Sheridan Le Fanu’s novel
Here is a tightly laced, elegantly cut gothic period drama that easily slips through the cracks as the barrage of upmarket cinema vying for awards begins. The 19th-century source material, Sheridan Le Fanu’s novel Uncle Silas, isn’t super well-known outside university literature departments, and the lead actors aren’t especially famous names either – although gravelly-voiced David Wilmot, here playing the heavy, has built a career making indelible impressions with supporting roles on film and TV (Station Eleven). Likewise, if you caught limited TV series Ridley Road then the talents of Agnes O’Casey will already be a known quantity. But in a way, the freshness of face and/or versatility of both O’Casey and Wilmot, along with the rest of the cast, are what makes this feel like a discovery.
