Warning: contains plot spoilers for Shetland series eight, episode two.
The Shetland islands only have a population of 22,000 – roughly a tenth of the number of people who go to Glastonbury Festival – so up there, you can expect to run into the same faces time and again. It’s no different for Scottish actors on TV. There are only a finite number, and in a long-running series like BBC One’s Shetland, sometimes cast-members get recycled from one role to another.
That’s what happened with Ann Louise Ross, the actor who plays farmer and widower Agnes Moffat in Shetland series eight. We first met Agnes in episode one, when (temporary Di) Tosh is investigating a series of livestock murders. Several of Agnes’ sheep have been found with their throats cut and daubed in their blood with a mysterious symbol.
In episode two, that same symbol is also found tattooed on...

Some movies endure as a treasured soundtrack to which the film itself becomes a mere footnote. That seems likely to prove the case with “Creation Stories,” a biopic of Creation Records’ founder Alan McGee that duly draws sonic fuel from the stellar array of Britpop bands he was involved with. But as directed by Nick Moran in obvious imitation of executive producer Danny Boyle’s most hyperbolic style, scripted by Irvine Welsh and Dean Cavanagh, this apparently loose interpretation of the subject’s memoir becomes a hyperventilating “Behind the Music” caricature, all familiar flash and precious little substance. Rlj Entertainment is releasing on demand and digital platforms in the U.S. on Feb. 25, following openings in most other territories.
McGee’s 2013 same-titled tome is a breezy yet cogent chronicle of a whirlwind career, written in the clear-eyed retrospect of sobriety after years of chemical excess. But the film immediately lunges...

You know those DVDs that sit in a giant Walmart bin, where, if you’re so inclined, you can spend half an hour sifting for a $2 treasure? The kinds of movies usually dumped unceremoniously into theaters in January, and maybe if you’re going stir crazy you take a chance and find yourself happily surprised? “Hunter Killer” is one of those.
It’s not going to win any Oscars, or give “Halloween” a run for its money. And what it’s doing taking up valuable cineplex space in the fall is anyone’s guess. But sometimes there’s a pleasure to be had in finding one’s low expectations met and even surpassed. And since we’re already damning this one with faint praise, let’s push it further still: As Cold War submarine thrillers starring Gerard Butler go, you could do a lot worse.

Troye Sivan had launched his entertainment career as an actor, but once his music took off over the past few years, he wasn’t sure when he would have time to return to acting. He did know, however, the role that would get him back onscreen would have to be something extraordinary.

If you haven't watched The Kissing Booth on Netflix yet, then run, don't walk to your nearest streaming device and queue up this modern masterpiece of teen melodrama immediately.
Ok, now that you've seen it, you probably have a lot of questions, like is the actor who plays Noah the tallest man on the planet? Why am I obsessed with this weird movie? And who is that random bad guy who appears only to make trouble before slinking back into the shadows of the world's largest high school beach party? If that last question is your most pressing one, then you're in luck, because the actor who plays Warren in The Kissing Booth is Byron Langley.
Langley is a 24-year-old actor, model, and YouTuber. He even has his own channel, where he filmed a vlog of himself reacting to his role in The Kissing Booth, so that's definitely something you...

Director Donovan Marsh has hit these pages before thanks to his coming of age comedy Spud - which features John Cleese in a supporting role - but he's mining entirely different ground with his Toronto selected action film iNumber Number. 'The worst thing anyone's ever said to me? "Are you Michael Palin?"'
John Cleese, 72, was born in Weston-super-Mare. At Cambridge University, he studied law and joined the Footlights, where he met Graham Chapman. In the late 60s, he formed the Monty Python troupe with Chapman, Eric Idle, Michael Palin, Terry Jones and Terry Gilliam. Cleese went on to further success as Basil Fawlty in Fawlty Towers, which he wrote with his then wife, Connie Booth. In 1988, Cleese wrote and starred in the hit movie, A Fish Called Wanda. His latest film, Spud, is out on DVD. Cleese recently married for the fourth time and lives in Monaco.
When were you happiest?
There are different kinds of happiness, but the simplest was when I was 13 because what one had to do was so obvious.
What is your greatest fear?
Lack of meaning.
Which living person do you most admire, and why?...

Earlier this year, I described the quiet little indie flick Bass Ackwards as a "Rowlesian work of whimsy." I never really thought I'd have reason to drag that particular turn of phrase out again, but after watching the trailer for Spud, I feel I have no choice. This is, indeed, a Rowlesian work of whimsy. It's cute, it's got charming music, it focuses on a coming-of-age tale. It's the type of thing that makes me goddamn nauseous.
Except, of course, for two things:
1) It's a South African film, filmed in South Africa with an almost entirely South African cast. Despite my recent foray into American citizenship, I still identify a good bit with South Africa, and am always interested in seeing their film industry thrive... basically, I keep waiting for the next Totsi or District 9. Spud looks like it has some promise, in no small part because...
2) John Cleese.

It's hard to find a nation on the globe whose box office is not being dominated by either Harry Potter or Tangled right now, but there are a few. In Japan it's Space Battleship Yamato topping the chart. And Finland has Rare Exports. And South Africa? In South Africa it's schoolboy comedy Spud at the top of the list.
South Africa, the early 1990s. John "Spud" Milton has embarked on his first year at an elite, boys-only private school. Cursed with parents from well beyond the lunatic fringe, a senile granny, and a dormitory full of strange characters, Spud has to forge a new life for himself in this foreign and sometimes hostile environment. Surrounded by names such as Gecko, Rambo, Rain Man and Mad Dog, Spud takes his first tentative steps along the path toward manhood. Armed with only his wits and his diary, Spud takes us from illegal...

An effort by South African actors to form a new union is gathering momentum while being received dubiously by the region's production sector.
Currently, the country's actors have a small, but inactive union -- the 300-member Performing Arts Workers' Equity -- which answers to the Congress of South African Trade Unions. But in the hope of luring more foreign production, the current South African government in 2008 did away with the need for special work permits for foreign-born actors and crew -- weakening the power of Pawe to protect local talent.
According to organizer John Kani, the Tony winner and elder statesman of South African theater, the new union effort looks to protect the country's talent without restricting international filmmakers from taking advantage of South Africa's growing runaway production sector.
"We would like to see some form of gatekeeping or work permits," Kani says. "As it stands now, international actors can come into the country,...

As a hardcore fan of all things Monty Python, I tend to follow the alumni wherever they go, regardless of how questionable their decisions may be. While rummaging through John Cleese’s Facebook page this morning, I discovered a trailer for director Donovan Marsh’s upcoming drama/comedy “Spud”, which is based on the novel by acclaimed author John Van De Ruit. The film takes place at a boarding school in South Africa during the early 90′s, and focuses on the misadventures of a boy named Spud. Judging from the lengthy synopsis provided below, the picture sounds like an edgier version of “Diary of a Wimpy Kid”, a movie I happen to think very highly of. No, I’m not kidding. Here’s the aforementioned synopsis: It’s South Africa 1990. Two major events are about to happen: The release of Nelson Mandela and, more importantly, it’s Spud Milton’s...
