Love and Happiness is a Dutch David Lynch on a shoestring budget. Apparently a love story, the film turns into a menage-a-trois drama, and into an SM-fantasy, finally leading to a happy coupling of handsome young Anna (Anne Cavadino)and Michael (Sebastiaan Labrie). There is a disturbing sense of unfulfilled desire in this film, with sex and a rather savage SM-scene. Some of the dialog is quite funny, but it's definitely no slap-and-tickle. Described by the author in various interviews as a story about the longings of 26-year old women, in spite of its title, this is a very dark film. Rather than a story, it is a dreamlike string of thoughts and encounters along the lines of Lynch' Mulholland Drive or Richard Linklaters Waking Life. It's good, and it stays with you for a long time, but it's hard to get to grips with.
