Finally....

Some of the recent episodes have been rather lackluster and lame. However, in this show they truly turn themselves back around to the old NCIS that I have missed. The great who done it style show mixed with some light humor and great chemistry among the actors/actresses. Hope they keep making them like this.

An episode that tackled a subject very prevalent in politics today, while someone not choosing a side. That was smart. While they could have gone deeper here in some areas, it was a solid episode of NCIS for sure that focused on a very vital issue.

One best episodes in this show history

I simply love this episode, as the episode touches on things in our society that we sometimes we oftentimes forget, like our veterans and other people who have seemed to fall through cracks of this society! A wonderful written story that contains material that seem to be realistic also not too denigrating to people who are now actually facing these type situations today in our society everyday! All the characters in this episode are allowed to show some compassion, WITHOUT judgement or an agenda based ideas! The Gibbs character allows another veteran character to " come home" through some simple communications between the two characters about their shared responsibilities & pains in of both their perspective lives.

A solid kick up Washington's backside

In most countries there are armed forces, composed of people standing ready to risk death or injury to defend their country and their fellow citizens. For that risk, these people deserve the *full* support of their nation for the rest of their lives, no matter how those lives may go. While they are in military service it is natural and necessary that they form bonds, making single supportive units. I am not a great fan of American militarism and the way their politicians use it, but I have always admired the way "NCIS" presents the comradeship and loyalty inherent in the armed forces - we see that in this episode. The problem of homeless veterans is complex. Homeless people in general are so for many different reasons: family abuse, mental illness, social inadequacy, alcoholism and many others. Ex-military can add PTSD, in-unit bullying and a host of other factors. But the government of whichever country these people served cannot give up its responsibility of care after their service. So, the fact that these veterans are there is an indictment of the government. In every country with armed forces, there should be a government department tasked with tracking the mental, physical and economic wellbeing of *all* ex-military personnel and providing appropriate support if it is needed and wanted. This could be a complex question, since it might not be obvious that someone was in need in a particular area, and they might themselves deny it. Apart from that rant (! Sorry!) I can't help wondering how much of their own stories Gibbs and Sloane told to Barney.

Warning: Spoilers
Despite being in the IMDB cast list for this episode Cote De Polo was nowhere to be seen, but it was still a good episode focusing on the plight of homeless veterans in the US.

Really?
hasansevik3 November 2019
This show has been on the decline since Di Nozo and Ziva left. But this episode has made the show hit rock bottom. The entire episode was like one long Marine recruitment ad.

Veterans get less and less funding each year, that's why a large proportion of homeless in the great US of A are vets. Also, these ex-Vets don't go around introducing themselves by their military names and ranks. (Work a day in a homeless shelter and you'll find that 99% of these Vets hate what the country did to them.) And a couple of mutilated homeless people won't change policy at the Federal level - pretending it would is just another lie that Hollywood is selling up dumbass Americans who think their country cares about them.

This show was good once. Now it's propaganda in overdrive.

It's Just Sooooo Campy.
electric-crow14 November 2019
I had written off NCIS after watching a recorded episode last week but I noticed I had another episode on my DVR. I had about an hour to wait until another show started so watched it. It was so bad. I get that it was a well intended attempt at illuminating alleged VA issues but as military retiree and frequent VA patron it was largely inaccurate and irresponsible of the shows producers. Not only that it was so campy especially the scene towards the end where the bad guy is "trying" to escape but one by one the homeless vets jump out and block his every move while announcing their rank and service. I really cannot imagine the team of writers sitting around the table and saying, "Yeah, that scene will be so cool!".

Was not all that good

Warning: Spoilers
While I do think giving the audience something to think about is fantastic, "NCIS" is not a show that one watches for its political messages. Above all, "NCIS" is an entertainment. "Someone Else's Shoes" is sadly not a very good episode, though there are some good aspects to it.

Let's start with the good aspects.

. The production values of the episode are great as usual. The episode is well-directed, the music fits the scenery and the performances are solid for the most part. Only Ellen Ratner comes off a bit stiff.

. There are humorous parts in the story and I did enjoy the character of Bernard Williams, who had a compelling backstory.

But...

. The dialogue is exposition-heavy at times and comes off melodramatic in places. The character choices are a tad bizarre too (Terry, Erica Bell are kind of annoying, unrealistic actually). The story is not that easy to get into, because there are many political messages about homeless veterans, social media and overworked doctors shoved down your throat. The topic about homeless vets is agreed superficially handled here. The solution feels rushed and needed more explanations.

Overall, did not enjoy it.

4/10 HK.
